Instant Replay, Here We Come... Hopefully
By Larry Marshall
So far this NBA postseason, refs are batting .333 on game-deciding buzzer beaters. Baron Davis' buzzer beater against Orlando was clearly good, but got waved off. Reggie's three against New Jersey was clearly late, but counted. The refs finally got it right with Jerry Stackhouse's three against the Celtics - no good. All creating a buzz that the NBA needs to add instant replay next year - but only for buzzer beating shots.
Why stop there? Sure, there are those subjective calls
that instant replay will never help decide. Instant
replay wouldn't necessarily help show malicious intent
on flagrant fouls, the difference between an offensive
foul and a blocking foul, or who that loose ball foul
really should have been called on.
But what about deciding who last touched a ball before it went out of bounds? Did that shot touch the rim or not? Was his foot on the three point line when he shot it? In all of these situations instant replay can give a clear, indisputable answer most of the time. There will be those instances where the replay is inconclusive, and in those situations just follow the lead of the NFL and let the original play stand as called.
The NBA faces a tough decision this summer. If want to use instant replay in for buzzer beaters, the argument is certainly there to use it elsewhere as well.
