Which player position declines the hardest and fastest as the years go on?

Big men

They always have knee and foot problems and usually only last till their early 30s

Gp wasn't that old when he became useless, was he?

I'd think swingmen's athleticism fading would have a big role in their talents dropping off hard. Bigmen dont really need to be athletic.

SG

How many SG´s could keep their game at a high level after age 32, except for Reggie Miller and Michael Jordan?

Big men seem to decline the most. Moreso centers. They can last a decent while, but they have the biggest drop in their effectiveness. Bein slow and big are a dime a dozen. Once the speed goes, the post moves go, and the explosion goes

KAJ disagrees.

I guess you have a point in big men. They see more banging and physical play than any other position.

Thats a special situation. even at his old age, he was slowed, but he never relied heavily on speed. He had his fundamental skills down and those never leave you. He also had a goto move that no one could really defend with consistency

Look at Dikembe Mutombo he's like 50 years old. In my opinion it has to be swing men. Once their athleticism goes they became subpar. Look at Stackhouse he's garbage now.

KAJ, Moses Malone, Robert Parish...

If you´re a skilled big man, and not too banged up, you can play until you´re 40. Big men enter their prime at the age of 30 due to the complexion of their position.

SG´s decline the fastest. Mitch Richmond anyone?

It's not about position really, but more on how much a player relies on his athleticism, as opposed to his learning to play without it. Of course the number of good athletic players in a given position will skewer the results towards that position.

I always thought big men could last forever…

Kareem
Robert Parrish
Mutombo

IF Shaquille were to play his cards right and know his role, he too can put in several more years as a servicable big…

For short careers, I think maybe point guards? Of course there will be the occasional John Stockton, but it seems that historically, PG's have the shortest shelf life…

I think it's SG. Technically, SG is the position where skill is required the most. Well, skill can only be so affective if the player has the speed and the agility. (unless you're Paul Pierce..i dont get how he's so slow but still gets to drive to the hoop) Once SG's get to a certain age, their speed and agility takes a big hit that goes down like a waterfall.

Probably the swingmen. With centers, you have players like Kareem, Wilt, Moses, Parish, and Shaq who've all had big impacts in later years, with PGs, you have players like Stockton, Kidd, and Nash who've done the same, with PFs you have Malone, Rodman. With swingmen, people have mentioned Jordan and Reggie, but Jordan took almost 5 years off through his career, and Reggie is primarily a shooter. I can't think of any other swingmen that played that great in later years.
