Default Bargnani To Be Traded or Amnestied By July 1st

Thoughts?

What kind of return should Ujiri be looking for?

Would you want a package in return or feel better amnestying the contract and getting $23 million in cap room over the next two seasons?

I believe the smartest move would be to trade him for an expiring contract of the same value and letting that player and Kleiza's contract's expire at seasons end. Then we may use the amnesty clause on Fields giving us a ton of cap space for next season.

The raps can't amnesty Fields - only contracts signed under the old CBA can be amnestied.

Oh yes that's right, I forgot. Then just amnesty Bargs if you can't trade him. Best bang for your buck.

I don't see how they could get anything back for Bargnani other than an equally bad contract. Unless there is some manager in the league that really thinks all he needs is the "change of scenery" to get going. I wouldn't bet any money on that though.

And the only reason to amnesty a player is to use that cap room on someone else right away. You still have to pay the amnestied player the full value of his deal. So if he's amnestied, it looks like the Raptors are still doing the "retool" thing rather than rebuilding which doesn't fill me with much hope for the future.

Bargs is tradeable if there is a GM in the league who seeks to get fired.

This

Its all about "what cost"

Intelectually there are dozens of deals. At what cost to Raptors. Further can you get a drfat pick out of it? Maybe...

Barge& Kliza for Gasol with Lakers works as its within 125% , La looses salary, Toronto climbs but is under the $72M luxury cap.

Barges and x for Boozer works in scenerios obviously as the Bulls have "an open offer on the table" according to media.

Barges (and Ross?) for Nick Batum with Blazers works. Gives the Blazer a 2 year window on a big man to play along side Aldridge and shed 2 extra years of contract.

Barges for Monta with Bucks. Buck end up shipping out a talented but egnimatic player for another egnimatic but they have few or no big men under contract. Its a holding pattern move to see which way they want to go vis a vis Jenning, Ilya, draft in 2014 and other FAs

etc... what cost...

No way do I see that deal ever going down. Batum is a good player and clearly better than Bargnani. He just struggled with a ton of injuries this year. Bargnani has negative value because of his contract and lack of production. Batum is nowhere near that level.

Doesn't have to be used to sign another player right away. And we are in such cap hell that amnestying Bargnani probably would even get us much space at all but unless a miracle happens via trade amnestying Bargnani is the best way to go with the franchise in every way.

None of those trades would fly NOR would they have any chance of unloading all of those contracts in one trade...

Mavericks supposedly will give up pick 13 to clear at least 9 mill more capspace. All I have them doing in addition is turning Vince and Cunningham into Felton- which is more important- backup pg or backup sg?

Phoenix wants a sg and has space. If they take chandler they have the ability to deal gortat who has a lot of value.

New York can't fill out a full roster- 3 players for 6 would be ideal

I'm not saying a trade like that is at all likely- but surprised you don't think any other teams would take that. Maybe raps get 30 and Knicks get 13

Actually I was agreeing with you.

The Batum trade was "an intelectual exercise" as I quoted.

There are lots of intelectual deals out there; what we get back is unlikely to be as good as a Raptor fan would hope.

To the specifics: Batum.

Possible but likely ? I would at best give it a 10% chance; it just depends on much pressure Aldridge is putting on to get big man help. Portland also has too many swingmen and really needs a big to round out the roster. Batum is a great player but his contract is onerous compared to what the team needs... Lilliard, Aldridge, help at the 4 or 5 to create space for Aldridge.

Swingmen (overpaid or underpaid) are always available. See Alan Anderson and his very reputable season.
