I never see anyone mention conference finals appearances when comparing great players. Making the conference finals is only important for players who have never done it, like Embiid.

Well you have now...I don't know how old you are but conference finals used to mean more than the NBA finals

Lol no that was never the case. LMAO. Bird, Magic and MJ considered it a failure if they got to the conference finals and lost.

Getting to the finals was seen as an accomplishment but just making the conference finals was never a thing if you didn't win it. You just made that up

Well Magic only made the conference finals and lost once..but Larry and MJ they may have considered it a failure but those series against the Pistons and 76ers were legendary. And frankly the Western Conference finals were bigger than the NBA finals for many years.

This also happens in football for 15 years the NFC championship game was bigger than the Superbowl...and then for a while the AFC championship game was bigger than the Superbowl.

Those series were legendary but the loser saw it as a failure, not an accomplishment. Back then there was no salary cap so teams stayed together longer and there were intense rivalries.

The NFL is a different subject. For maybe a 20 year stretch the Super Bowl game sucked. There was a long string of blowouts.

Are we the players? So you admit that the series are legendary yet you don't want to attribute value to them? Do you not know about Wilt vs Bill...when do you think they faced off LOL. Making it to the top four is a big deal...it's become less of a big deal thanks partly to Lebron having rivalries in the finals and other guys leaving teams.

Making the top 4 was a given for Wilt and Russell lol. All they had to do was show up and they could get to the conference finals. Winning it was an accomplishment, getting there wasn't.

Rivalries are just a casualty of the times. Stars have more mobility now and team payroll is limited by the cap.

I don't think it was a given for Larry. The East has a few good teams back then. The sixers were really good early in his career. The Bucks had some pretty good teams and later in the 80s the pistons took over.

The west was pretty weak though. The spurs were decent but not really a big threat. They had a much easier road that the Cs. If the Lakers were healthy they were pretty much a lock to make the finals. Making the WCF? not even worth mentioning.

Back in the mid 60s there were only 10 teams ffs.
