Revelation of the Beast
By Kofi Okyere
kmk1@prodigy.net

I wrestled as I always do to get some sleep. Slowly I fell into a trance like state and began to dream. I was in a strange place. There was a bright light in my eyes and a thumping in the air like fast paced, up beat music. Slowly my eyes adjusted an I saw in front of me a body of water with mist hovering over its surface. There were hills to my east and valleys to my west. Suddenly the water stirred and out of the deep came a man. He looked to be in his fifties, was medium height and wore glasses. In his hands were several miniature horns with letters etched in each. He breathed onto the horns then threw them to the ground. Each took the form of a beast with a horn in its head displaying its letters. With wanton abandon they pounced on each other and a battle ensued.

Eight of them immediately caught my attention. They had the letters LAL, PT, PS, SS, SAS, UJ, and MT etched into their horns.

The beast with the LAL horn was the leanest of the eight but had a right arm that wielded the strength of armies. Its left hand was lightning quick and at times landed the deadlier blows.

The beast with the PT horn was the most proportional and although did not have arms as big as the LAL beast it was taller and stronger in every other respect. Each limb landed a devastating blow and the beast never seemed to tire. All around it dropped like flies.

PS was the next best proportioned of the beasts but not as big as PT. However it was the quickest of the beasts with lethal spurts in its attack. It took most of guard and surprised others when it demonstrated its strength.

SS seamed to lurk in the shadows using stealth rather than speed or strength to flatten its enemies. With closer inspection I noticed it had the biggest mouth out of all the beasts but the weakest legs hence its inability to make swift attacks.

UJ was the oldest of the beasts and most skilled in the art of war. Although it still had one strong arm it relied more on its experience and cunning.

SAS was the tallest of the beasts and just as big as PT. It however seemed more passive and I questioned its strength. None the less it methodically dismantled all who stood in its way.

The last of the beasts MT was greatly handicapped but stood proud and vanquished it foes with a vengeance. I admired it greatly and wondered what it would have been like to see it do battle with a sound body.

I watched as they battled fiercely till only four stood standing. LAL, PT, PS and SAS. SAS and PS  moved to one side and PT and LL moved to another and took their stances to do battle.

Through the corner of my eye I saw a figure move, so I looked up. On yonder hill stood a beast I hadn't noticed before. He had the letters MH in his horn. It was hard to tell what his strengths were. He was definitely not as tall as the PT, and SAS but was nearly as big and had the most menacing stare.

I turned my attention back to the other beasts just in time to see LAL make the first attack. It knocked PT to the ground with its oversized right hand. In a spring like manner PT leaped up and administered four lethal blows. LAL crashed to the ground and lay motionless.

SAS and PS seemed more evenly matched. PS was however just too quick. In the end defeat came swiftly to SAS.

Both PT and PS looked at the beast on yonder hill, the man, and then at each other. It became clear to me. These were not just crazed beasts. They were all battling for a prize. Who ever won the battle had much to gain. Freedom perhaps, or respect.

Then I heard my name. The voice became louder and louder. I was awake; my wife had woken me up. I tried hard to go back to sleep to see the end of the battle I had just witnessed. Alas, nothing worked.

Someday soon hopefully I hope to return to that battleground and find a sign as to who the victor was that day. But I know there's more to it than meets the eye.

He who has understanding, heed my words.
