Timberwolves sign Damien Wilkins to offer sheet
Wolves News | Aug. 19, 2005
Minnesota Timberwolves General Manager Jim Stack today announced that the team has signed restricted free agent guard/forward Damien Wilkins of the Seattle SuperSonics to an offer sheet. Per team policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed. Under the NBA's new Collective Bargaining Agreement, Seattle has seven days to match the offer.
"Damien is someone that we believe has tremendous upside," Stack said. "He continually improved throughout last season, and he became a significant contributor for Seattle during the playoffs. Hopefully, we'll see him in a Timberwolves uniform this upcoming season."
In his first NBA season in 2004-05, Wilkins posted averages of 6.3 points (.435 FG%), 2.3 rebounds and 17.9 minutes per contest in 29 games (seven started). The 6-6, 225-pound guard/forward improved those numbers to 7.8 ppg (.471 FG%), 3.2 rpg and 25.2 mpg against San Antonio in the Western Conference Semifinals (5 games), including a 15-point (7-for-11 FG), six-rebound effort in Game 3. He scored a career-high 21 points at Portland on March 24, 2005.
Wilkins is the son of 13-year NBA veteran Gerald Wilkins and nephew of nine-time NBA All-Star Dominique Wilkins. An undrafted free agent, Wilkins was originally signed by Seattle on Oct. 4, 2004.
