/ Apr. 18, 2005

Richard Peddie, president and chief executive officer of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, announced Monday that Wayne Embry will serve as Senior Basketball Advisor to the President. Embry joined the Toronto Raptors organization in June 2004 as Senior Advisor to the General Manager.

“Wayne Embry brought more than 40 years of NBA experience, both as a Hall of Fame player and as a Hall of Fame front office executive, to the Toronto Raptors this season, and he’s made important contributions behind the scenes,” said Peddie. “While for a variety of reasons, Wayne was only able to advise Rob Babcock to a limited degree this season, he will now be more available to Rob and will be able to advise me on the basketball matters that are under my umbrella as president and CEO of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment.

“Few people in the NBA can match Wayne’s outstanding reputation for understanding all that is required to operate a successful basketball franchise,” Peddie added. “While Wayne will not have direct authority over basketball operations, enhancing his role will allow us to better capitalize on his expertise and experience both on the basketball court, in the community and with our fan-base.”

In his new role Embry will report directly to Peddie as his advisor on matters related to the Raptors. He will assist Babcock on the development of the club’s long-term strategic plan, and play a greater role in assisting him in the positioning of the Raptors and the city of Toronto with league players and their agents.

“I have enjoyed the opportunity to assist the Toronto Raptors organization this season, and I thank Richard Peddie, Rob Babcock and the Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment Board of Directors for the opportunity to be able to further that going forward,” Embry said. “The ingredients are in place to build a franchise here that can be in the upper echelon of the NBA. It’s not an easy process and it doesn’t happen quickly, but I’m excited to have the chance to contribute to that effort in a more formal manner.”

“I was pleased to hire Wayne Embry a year ago because of my respect for him, and because of the knowledge and expertise that he could bring to us,” said Rob Babcock, general manager of the Raptors. “Wayne is a major asset to our entire organization. We’re grateful that this move will enable us to take better advantage of all that he has to offer to our operation.”

Embry’s legendary front office career began when he was instrumental in negotiations that brought Oscar Robertson to Milwaukee to join forces with Lew Alcindor, a move that resulted in the Bucks winning the 1971 NBA Championship. He became the NBA’s first African American general manager in 1972, and served in the capacity with the Bucks for eight seasons. From 1985-92 he served as vice president and general manager of the Cleveland Cavaliers, resurrecting a franchise into one of the NBA’s premier clubs. Embry was promoted to executive vice president in 1992, and made history once again in 1994 by becoming the first African American NBA team president and chief operating officer. Embry earned The Sporting News Executive of the Year honours in 1992 and 1998, as well as being named Sports Illustrated’s Executive of the Year in 1998.

Embry’s Hall of Fame playing career began in 1958 with the Cincinnati Royals, where he played eight seasons and earned first team All-NBA honours on five occasions. He joined the Boston Celtics in 1966 and was instrumental in helping the Celtics capture the 1968 NBA Championship. He finished his playing career the following year as the first captain in Milwaukee Bucks history, and was enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1999.

Away from basketball Embry has been involved in numerous business ventures, including membership on the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland’s Board of Directors where he plays a large role in shaping monetary and economic policies.
