NBA Trade Analysis
By Jeff Mangurten / Mar. 2, 2005
KINGS GET: Corliss Williamson, Kenny Thomas, Brian Skinner
SIXERS GET: Chris Webber, Michael Bradley, Matt Barnes
FOR SIXERS: Great deal for Philly, who get their first high/low threats since Moses and the Doctor. Will this trade get the Sixers into East title contention? Possibly, but probably not. With Shaq's injury not too severe, I'd still take Detroit or Miami over Philly. That being said, both AI and C-Webb are here for a while.
FOR KINGS: While this is only the beginning of a title push for the Sixers, it's the beginning of a minor rebuilding process for the Kings. Sacramento gets two solid but undersized power forwards in Williamson and Thomas. This makes Peja Stojakovic (who has to be re-signed) the main man again. Remember, Sacramento was at their best last year without Webber, so this may be a better move than it looks. Too often, the ball stopped in Webber's hands for more than four or five seconds, and that's a killer for the Kings, who cash their checks on ball movement. Maybe they can re-energize themselves with this move.
SIXERS GET: Rodney Rogers, Jamal Mashburn
HORNETS GET: Glenn Robinson
FOR SIXERS: Getting Rodney Rogers is decent. They really just wanted to trade Glenn Robinson away. Jamal Mashburn isn't expected to ever play again. Though, anything is possible.
FOR HORNETS: Not too much going for New Orleans. The Hornets just want to dump salary at this point.
MAVERICKS GET: Keith Van Horn
BUCKS GET: Calvin Booth, Alan Henderson, cash
FOR DALLAS: The Mavs traded two players who weren't key parts of the team for a guy who is good enough to start on most NBA teams. They're ridiculously deep, now. Their bench can battle with most teams' starters. And money is no object.
FOR MILWAUKEE: The Bucks are trying to free cap space to sign Michael Redd after the season.
BUCKS GET: Reece Gaines, 2 draft picks
ROCKETS GET: Mike James, Zendon Hamilton
FOR BUCKS: Again, the Bucks just want salary cap room. Every little bit helps.
FOR ROCKETS: Nice deal for Houston, who for the third time this year sent almost nothing away for a player that can make an impact. Carroll Dawson has turned an ineffective squad into a red hot playoff team over the course of about three months. Great work.
CAVS GET: Jiri Welsch
CELTICS GET: 2007 First Round Pick
FOR CAVS: The Cavs are getting another solid player in a trade, for a draft pick that they hope isn't going to be too high. This trade reminds me of other Cavs trades, acquiring Jeff McInnis, Drew Gooden, Eric Snow and Lucious Harris in separate deals. A solid pickup.
FOR CELTICS: The Celtics didn't need Jiri Welsch anymore. So, they got a first rounder for him. Makes sense.
KNICKS GET: Malik Rose, two 1st round picks
SPURS GET: Nazr Mohammed, Jamison Brewer
FOR KNICKS: A bizzare move. Malik Rose? The two picks are going to be around 29 or 30 - barely first rounders. Yikes. And Rose's contract is bigger and longer than Nazr's.
FOR SPURS: Nice deal for San Antonio. They sent little-used Rose to the Knicks, and get a solid big guy. Mohammed has shown signs of becoming a very good center. Since this trade, Jamison Brewer has been waived.
KNICKS GET: Maurice Taylor
ROCKETS GET: Vin Baker, Moochie Norris, 2006 Second Round Pick
FOR KNICKS: New York sends unneeded players for another overpriced contract. And another power forward. So New York now has four power forwards, three of whom are shorter than you want your power forward to be, and no center.
ROCKETS GET: The Rockets just wanted to get rid of Mo Taylor's contract. New York likes to do that sort of favor for other teams.
CELTICS GET: Antoine Walker
HAWKS GET: Gary Payton, Michael Stewart, Tom Gugliotta, future 1st rd. pick.
FOR CELTICS: It seems wacky to bring Walker back, but so far he's looked good, and the Celtics seem pumped up.
FOR HAWKS: Atlanta getting an expiring contract for an expiring contract. Nice move, Atlanta. The fogotten team makes another bizzare deadline move to aid another team's playoff run. They gave Detroit Rasheed Wallace last year, now they give Toine to Boston. Charles Barkley must be right, they must be trying to sign Shaq in 3 years.
WARRIORS GET: Baron Davis
HORNETS GET: Dale Davis, Speedy Claxton
FOR WARRIORS: Jason Richardson and Baron Davis (if healthy) can be one of the best backcourts in the NBA. Golden State keeps Mike Dunleavy, Adonal Foyle and Derek Fisher, so this is a great move for Golden State. Even if Golden State can't contend for a playoff spot this year, they'll be fun to watch the rest of the way in.
FOR HORNETS: Speedy Claxton can play, but I wonder if the Hornets could have gotten a bit more for Baron Davis. Dale Davis is gone; the team bought out his contract, and he didn't want to be there. A solid move, freeing up cap room for New Orleans.
