The Phoenix Suns today finalized their training camp roster by signing free agents guard Derrick Dial, center Justin Rowe and forward Paul Shirley.
Dial, a four-year NBA veteran, owns career averages of 3.1 points and 1.6 rebounds in 8.4 minutes in 82 games with Orlando, Toronto, New Jersey and San Antonio. Most recently, the former Eastern Michigan University star participated on the Suns’ summer league team in July, averaging 13.0 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.0 assists in three games at the Reebok Vegas Summer League and added 6.7 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.2 assists in six games at the Reebok Rocky Mountain Revue. The 6-4, 184-pound guard played in nine games for the Magic in 2003-04, averaging 2.9 points and 1.4 rebounds in 9.6 minutes. Dial, the 52nd pick overall in the 1998 NBA Draft, spent the majority of last season with the Long Beach Jam of the ABA, where he was named the league’s top offensive player and won the ABA Title.
Rowe, a 7-0, 235-pound center, played in 21 games for Ujbuda Budapest in Hungary in 2003-04 and averaged 9.8 points, 6.6 rebounds, 1.7 steals and 1.6 blocks. The former University of Maine center went undrafted in the 2003 NBA Draft despite finishing as the school’s all-time leading shotblocker with 226 in two seasons.
Shirley has appeared in nine NBA games, including seven contests with Chicago in 2003-04, where he averaged 3.0 points and 2.3 rebounds in 12.3 minutes. The 6-10, 230-pound forward grabbed a career-high five rebounds in a career-high 26 minutes at Indiana on March 22. However, he left the game in the third quarter with a bruised kidney and spent the final 12 games on the injured list (March 23-April 14). Prior to signing with the Bulls on March 4, Shirley was a member of the ABA’s Kansas City Knights where he averaged a team-high 9.5 rebounds. In his first NBA stint, he played in two games with Atlanta after signing a 10-day contract on Jan. 3, 2003.
The 2004-05 season begins Monday, Oct. 4 when the team hosts Media Day at 3 p.m. on the America West Arena practice court. Phoenix will conduct training camp on the campus of Northern Arizona University at the Walkup Skydome from Oct. 5-11.
