Spurs broadcast team announced
Some familiar names will be announcing games in San Antonio
he San Antonio Spurs today announced their new television broadcast team for the 2003-04 regular season.
The Spurs play-by-play duties will be split between veteran broadcasters Dick Stockton and Bill Land. Stockton, a 35 year broadcast veteran, has been behind the mic for all four major sports and two Olympic Games. He is currently in his tenth season as play-by play announcer for the NFL on Fox and in his ninth season calling the NBA on TNT Land, who is currently the play-by play announcer on Fox Sports Net Big 12 regional football telecasts and the host of the Big 12 Showcase, brings over 18 years of experience to the Spurs broadcast team. Since joining Fox in 1988 Land has delivered the play-by-play call for 16 different sports including football, baseball, Men’s and Women’s basketball. He has also served as a back up for Spurs broadcasts.
Stockton and Land will be joined by a trio of color analysts that have strong ties to the Spurs organization. Spurs Director of Scouting Lance Blanks and former Spurs players Sean Elliott and Steve Kerr will divide the analyst duties. Blanks, a Del Rio Texas native, will step behind the mic for 2003-04 season after calling several Spurs regular season and playoff games during the 2003 season. Blanks, the 26th overall pick of the Detroit Pistons in 1990, played professionally for eight years including two seasons with the Pistons and one with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Sean Elliott will return for his third full season as a color analyst. Elliott will work as the Spurs color analyst in addition to his duties as an NBA analyst for ESPN. Elliott spent eleven seasons as a Spurs player. A two-time NBA All-Star (1993 and 1996) Elliott made history when he returned to the court on March 14, 2000 after undergoing a kidney transplant on August 16, 1999.
Steve Kerr begins his rookie year behind the microphone after spending 15 seasons in the NBA. Kerr, a five-time NBA Champion, (1996, ’97, ’98 with the Bulls and 1999, ’03 with the Spurs) played for six different NBA franchises in his fifteen seasons. He retires as the NBA as the all-time leader in three-point field goal percentage, shooting 45.4% for his career. Kerr will split duties between the Spurs and TNT where he will serve as an NBA analyst.
The Spurs also announced their 2003-04 broadcast schedule. Spurs fans will be able to see all 82 Spurs games on either the Spurs local broadcast network or one of the NBA’s national broadcast partners.
The Spurs local broadcast partners will split the schedule three ways, Fox Sports Net will televise 31 Spurs game this season highlighted by the Spurs-Nets match-up November 3 and a March 31 contest versus the Sacramento Kings. KRRT (WB 35) will also have 31 Spurs games including November 1 against the New York Knicks and a March 23 contest at Minnesota. KENS 5, the flagship TV station of the Spurs, will televise 10 Spurs regular season contests including December 8 against Dallas and a December 3 contest with the Los Angeles Lakers.
The Spurs will appear on national television 32 times this season. ESPN and ESPN2 will televise eleven Spurs games, TNT will feature the Spurs nine times, NBATV will televise eight games and the Spurs will appear on ABC four times during the 2003-04 regular season.
