Sixers Sign Willie Green and Kyle Korver
Both were second round draft picks acquired in trades
Philadelphia, Pa. - August 8, 2003 - Philadelphia 76ers President and
General Manager Billy King announced that the Sixers have signed Willie
Green and Kyle Korver, both second round selections in the 2003 NBA Draft
acquired by Philadelphia via draft-night trades on June 26. Per team
policy, terms of the contracts are not disclosed.
Green, selected by Seattle with the 41st pick in the 2003 Draft, was traded
to Philadelphia for the draft rights to Sixers second round selection (50th
pick overall), Paccelis Morlende, along with an undisclosed amount of cash.
Green averaged a career-best 22.6 points per game during his senior season
at the University of Detroit Mercy, a mark that ranked 11th nationally,
earning him Horizon League Player of the Year honors and an Honorable
Mention All-America selection by The Associated Press. The 6-foot-4,
200-pound guard, averaged 14.3 points per game during his four-year
collegiate career, finishing as the fourth leading scorer in Detroit history
with 1,779 points. He connected on 35.2 percent (120-for-341) from
three-point range, a mark that ranks sixth in Detroit history.
Recently, Green averaged 9.1 points, 2.4 assists and 1.5 rebounds in 10
summer league games with the Sixers, while shooting 45.1 percent (37-82)
from the floor. The Detroit product, finished second on the Sixers squad in
scoring (12.4 points per game) in five starts at the Reebok Pro Summer
League in Boston.
Korver, selected by New Jersey with the 51st pick in the 2003 Draft, was
traded to the Sixers for an undisclosed amount of cash on draft night. A
6-foot-7, 210-pound forward known for his long-range shooting ability,
Korver connected on a school-record and Missouri Valley Conference record
371 career three-pointers. An AP Second Team All-America selection as a
senior, he finished second in the nation in three-point field goal
percentage (48.0 percent) and ninth nationally in free throw percentage
(90.8 percent). Boasting a 45.3 career three-point field goal percentage
(371-819), Korver averaged 14.1 points per game during his four-year
collegiate career and ranks fifth all-time in scoring (1,801) at Creighton
In 10 summer league games with the Sixers, Korver averaged 8.3 points, 5.0
rebounds and 1.7 assists per game, while connecting on 42.9 percent (15-35)
from long range. He led the Reebok Rocky Mountain Revue by connecting on a
league-best 63.6 percent (7-11) from three-point range.
