NBA Playoffs: Nets-Pistons Game 6

/ May 16, 2004

Sunday night in New Jersey the Pistons played the Nets in game 6 of the series. Coming into the game the Nets lead the best-of-seven series 3 games to 2. InsideHoops.com presents raw, unedited game notes taken in real time.

The Nets started strong, opening a big lead. How big? I don't know, I was eating hot dogs.

At 4:20 The Nets are up, 19-12. Richard Jefferson has 8 points, Kerry kittles has 6. for the pistons, Richard Hamilton has 6.

Rasheed Wallace is slower on defense than the healthy Rasheed is.

During the time-out at 2:38 (Nets up 21-19), they had a Sumo contest. I didn't pay attention to the rules, but it involved guys in air-filled Sumo costumes running around doing some stuff. I support all contests that involve those air-Sumo outfits. In fact, when an NBA game gets boring, they should make the players put those outfits on so the fans can at least enjoy a few laughs. Fortunately, this game is exciting so far, so my idea isn't necessary this evening.

At 2:20, Mehmet Okur drove the baseline and drew a foul. The Pistons could have used more of him -- specifically him doing that -- in Game 5.

At 1:55, Lucious Harris came in to replace Jason Kidd. Meanwhile, Ben Wallace missed two free throws after drawing a foul driving the baseline. It's Nets 21-20.

At 1:30, Richard Jefferson made like Jason kidd and faked a three-point shot from the left elbow, drove down the middle going right, and delivered a perfect pass to Kenyon Martin who was cutting from the left, on the baseline, who put it down and now has 7 points.

With 33.6 seconds left, Brian Scalebrine came in, and received a thunderous standing ovation from the fans. Chants of "Scal-a-bree-ney" filled the arena for the next few seconds.

With 20 seconds left, Rodney Rogers went completely insane and rather than taking an open shot, drove at the basket and threw down a big left-handed dunk over Ben Wallace.

END OF 1ST QUARTER: Nets 25 Pistons 23. Richard Jefferson and Kerry Kittles have 8 points each.

The Pistons are beginning this quarter with an extremely big, rugged lineup, Okur is at center, Rasheed Wallace is at power forward and Corliss "I can headbutt through buildings" Williamson is at small forward.

A steal by Mike James made it Pistons 27-25 with 10:47 left. The Nets call time-out.

At 8:58, Richard Hamilton and Ben Wallace came back in. And then Chauncey Billups.

At 8:40, Kenyon posted up against Kenyon Martin and tried to go strong in the paint on the left side, but Rasheed got up high and threw it.

At 8:00 it's Pistons 30-27. The pace of this game has slowed down. No one remembers how to shoot anymore. Jason Kidd's outside shot now resembles something you'd see from a lucky fan chosen at random.

Finally, at 7:40, Richard Hamilton put one in. Pistons up, 32-27.

An open three-point attempt from Lucious Harris around 7:05 was an airball. Maybe he's trying to imitate Kidd. At 6:40, Rasheed caught the ball in three-point range right at the top of the key and with no hesitation, swished it. Pistons up, 35-27.

A play later, Mike James, wide open, nailed a three. Pistons now up 10 with 6:00 left. This is a crucial time for the Nets. Time out. Rocky theme music fills the arena. Bruce Willis, sitting courtside, is shown on the big screen. Fans didn't seem to notice. Then, Michael Strahan of the NY Giants was shown, receiving a mix of boos and cheers. Danny Baldwin, of the tv show "Homocide," was shown next, drawing a few fans. I have no idea if any fans here actually know who anyone is.

At 5:30, Rip Hamilton drove right down the lane and created a layup for himself. Detroit leads by 12.

An Aaron Williams dunk excited the crowd and cut it to 10.

Ben Wallace decided to shoot an open jumper from around the free throw line. It looked awful. No, it didn't go in.

Jefferson drove the lane and tried to throw down on Okur, who blocked the shot in nasty fashion.

At 4:08, against a Pistons zone defense, Kidd hit a three-pointer from the middle. Hey, they have to go in once in a while.

During a time-out, the big screen showed Michael J. Fox, of "Scrubs." Fans gave him a nice cheer.

At 2:47 it's Pistons 40 Nets 34. Richard Jefferson has 10. Kittles has 8. Kenyon has 7. Richard Hamilton has 14. Rasheed Wallace has 7.

Aaron Williams and Corliss Williamson almost got into it. Aaron thought there was a fly on Corliss' bald head and appeared to brush it off rather aggressively.

Chauncey Billups has hit a few shots in a row, including a beautiful drive past Kittles in traffic for a layup.

Who would win in a battle, Bruce Willis' character in Die Hard or Mel Gibson's character in Lethal Weapon? Bruce is here, but Mel isn't and I have no idea why I thought to ask this.

Ben Wallace is extremely animated, all game long. At this rate he's got so much energy that if the Pistons lose he's liable to either (A) Explode, (B) Pick the entire arena up and roll it into the nearby swamp or (C) Let his hair out and unleash the afro.

A wide open Kittles three-point attempt misses. The Nets should be hitting these shots. With 20.5 seconds to go it's Pistons up, 48-36. Detroit has 9 second-chance points, compared to just 2 for the Nets. That's effort.

With 10 seconds left, Rip Hamilton pulled up from just inside three-point range with Kidd in his face and nailed a jumper. Rip rules. He finishes the half with 16 points on 8-of-13 shooting.

Detroit dominated the boards in a big way in the first half, literally doubling the Nets total rebounds. Ben Wallace alone grabbed 13 boards, matching the entire Nets team. Also, the Pistons shot over 50% in the half, while the Nets were below 40%. And Detroit went 4-of-5 from three-point range, while New Jersey went 1-of-9. Almost all other key stats were pretty much even.

END OF FIRST HALF: Pistons 50 Nets 36.

During halftime, my big decision was whether or not to have a hot dog.

At 9:34 in the third quarter, Detroit is up 53-40, and I've decided to have a second hot dog. With mustard. And some Pepsi.

Tayshaun Prince has shot around 33% from the field for this series.

At 8:50, Jefferson soared in for a dunk. The Nets are on a 6-0 run. Detroit's lead is 11.

A wide open Kittles three went in Bruce Willis is on his feet. Time-out Pistons. Larry Brown isn't happy. I'm only 10% of the way through my hot dog.

The Nets are operating like a machine now, running plays and executing properly.

The Pistons went over three minutes without a basket, until Tayshaun Prince hit with around 6:45 left. Detroit by 8.

Ben Wallace has 495 rebounds now, give or take a few.

At 4:23 it's Pistons 57 Nets 53. And a play later, a Nets fast break resulted in Kidd getting the ball to Kittles, who missed a contested layup but Kidd tipped it in to bring the Nets within 2 points.

The Nets are shooting under 35% for the game. The Pistons are shooting around 44%.

With 1:27 it's Pistons up, 59-55. Ben Wallace has 20 rebounds. No joke. The Pistons have 16 more rebounds than the Nets do.

With 30.8 seconds left, Kenyon Martin caught the ball just outside of the paint and drove in for an uncontested dunk, with Okur nearby getting a look at the bottom of Kenyon's sneakers.

END OF THIRD QUARTER: Pistons 60 Nets 57. Detroit has led by as much as 17 points in this game.

Scalabrine and his red hair are in the ballgame.

I've thrown away my cold hot dog.

Okur is delivering. Though, he looks out of shape. Kind of puffy. Maybe he eats lots of hot dogs. But he's doing very well.

Corliss Williamson can headbutt through a schoolbus.

At 9:00 it's Pistons 64 Nets 57.

Kenyon has an exhausted look on his face.

With 8;14 left in the game, Ben Wallace has 20 rebounds, and the entire Nets team has 26.

Lindsey Hunter nailed a three with 7:22 left to put the Pistons up by 8.

At 6:36, Jason Collins saw a wide open space down the middle and realized it was his one chance to actually throw one down like Kenyon. A golden opportunity. The chance of a lifetime. But Mehmet Okur ruined it for him, contesting the shot and committing a foul.

Lindsey Hunter is playing tight defense on Kidd. But Kidd shook him and hit a stop-and-pop jumper from the top of the key.

At 5:30, a steal by Kidd led to a Jefferson layup, bringing the Nets within 4. It's Pistons 72 Nets 68.

Jason Collins is awesome tonight, with 3 points and 5 fouls at the 5:00 mark of the 4th quarter.

The Pistons have made 9 more three-pointers than the Nets tonight.

Tayshaun Prince isn't too hot this series. The Pistons should have drafted Carmelo Anthony.

At 3:48 the Nets are only down by 2, and Tayshaun just got called for a charge. The fans are going nuts with "Lets go Nets!" chants. Though, these chants never seem to last very long. Like five seconds, then it gets quiet.

At 3:11 Ben Wallace tried to create his own shot against Jason Collins. Wallace wound up losing the ball out of bounds while going baseline. Not pretty.

At 1:33 it's Detroit by 3. The crowd's going nuts. And upon walking up from the press room to my seat in the arena, I ran into this dude nicknamed Bam, who I haven't seen since college about six years ago. What's up Bam!@!

At 1:21, Jefferson drives, and gets fouled by Tayshaun Prince. His 5th foul. I didn't see the foul, but whatever. Jefferson misses the first free throw, hits the second. Pistons by 2 with just 1:15 left in the game. The crowd is on their feet.

Rasheed Wallace catches the ball just to the side of the paint, with Kidd somehow switched onto him. Rasheed takes advantage, hitting a turnaround to put Detroit up by four.

Next play, Jefferson drives on Prince. Layup. Pistons by 2, under 30 seconds to go.

Next play, Rip Hamilton posts up against Kidd deep along the baseline, shoots, and nails it. Pistons 77 Nets 73 with 15.5 seconds left. Time-out Nets. Tons of fans immediately get up to leave.

With 15.5 seconds left, Lucious Harris try to inbound the ball, but tight Detroit pressure forces him to call another Nets time-out. The Nets are using Kidd, Harris, Jefferson, Kittles and Martin.

Martin scores. With 9.6 seconds left and a two-point lead, the Pistons call time-out.

Some drunken moron fans come over to my press table and start to ask me stupid questions. I ignore them. They leave.

The Pistons inbound to Chauncey Billups. Kidd intentionally fouls him. Billups hits the first free throw. Pistins up 3. Billups hits the second. With 8.8 seconds left Detroit is up by 4.

The Nets get no final shot. Jefferson tried to get one off, but Lindsey Hunter stripped him. Detroit survives and forces a Game 7, which will take place in Detroit.

WHAT EVERYONE THOUGHT WAS THE FINAL SCORE: Pistons 79 Nets 75.

BUT WAIT. To everyone's surprise, a foul was called against the Nets with 0.2 seconds left. Detroit hits two free throws.

THE ACTUAL FINAL SCORE: Pistons 81 Nets 75.
