Sixers trade Monty Williams for draft pick
Williams goes to Orlando for a conditional second round draft pick
Philadelphia 76ers President and General Manager Billy King announced today that the Sixers have acquired a 2004 conditional second round draft pick from the Orlando Magic in exchange for Monty Williams, a 2004 conditional second round draft pick and an undisclosed amount of cash.
The 2004 conditional second round draft pick was originally obtained by Philadelphia in a trade on June 26, 2002, with the Golden State Warriors. In that 2002 deal, the Sixers sent the draft rights for Jiri Welsch to Golden State in which the Sixers received a future protected first round selection, in addition to regaining their 2005 first round pick back from the Warriors, from a previous trade. The 2003 protected first round selection (from Golden State) converted into a conditional second round draft pick when the original terms of the that pick were not met.
Williams, a 6-foot-8, 225-pound forward, has spent the entire 2003-04 season on the injured list (left knee pain). He has career averages of 6.3 points and 2.8 rebounds in 456 appearances and has made six trips to the postseason with four different teams. During his nine-year NBA career, Williams has played with five teams since being drafted by the New York Knicks in the first round of the 1994 NBA Draft (24th pick overall) - New York, San Antonio, Denver, Orlando and Philadelphia.
After signing as a free agent with the 76ers on July 25, 2002, Williams was sidelined due to left knee surgery (10/25/02), repairing a medial meniscal tear sustained during a preseason game at Houston (10/24/02). He missed 57 games due to injury in 2002-03 and averaged 4.4 points and 2.1 rebounds per game in 21 appearances.
