Pistons waive McCaskill, sign three others

Detroit Pistons President of Basketball Operations Joe Dumars added to the club’s 2004 training camp roster today by announcing the signing of Nigel Dixon, Smush Parker and Terrence Shannon. Per team policy, terms of the contracts were not disclosed. In a related move, the club waived center Amal McCaskill.
Dixon, 24, finished his career at Western Kentucky after playing his first three seasons at Florida State. The 6-11, 320-pound center was named First Team All-Sun Belt Conference as a senior and was selected as the league’s Newcomer of the Year. He led the nation and broke the school record for field goal percentage, shooting 67.8 percent, and was named Honorable Mention All-America by Sports Illustrated.
Parker, 23, played in the FIBA Europe League with Aris Thessaloniki during the 2003-04 season. He averaged 18.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, 6.4 assists, 1.7 steals and 35.3 minutes in 10 games. The 6-4 guard out of Fordham University was an early entrant candidate and not drafted by an NBA franchise. He spent the 2002-03 season with the Cleveland Cavaliers and in 66 games (18 starts), averaged 6.2 points, 1.8 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 16.7 minutes during his rookie campaign.
Shannon, 24, spent the 2003-04 season with the Roanoke Dazzle of the National Basketball Developmental League (NBDL) and averaged 13.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 27.5 minutes. In two seasons with Roanoke, the 6-7 forward averaged 14.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.2 assists in 28.9 minutes. He participated in summer league play with the Memphis Grizzlies in 2002 and also has played professionally in the CBA and USBL.
The Pistons waived center Amal McCaskill. McCaskill joined the club as part of the offseason trade that sent Corliss Williamson to Philadelphia in exchange for Derrick Coleman.
