Forward Kurt Thomas had successful surgery today to
repair the extensor tendon in his right fifth phalanx. The procedure on his
finger was performed by Knicks medical staff member and hand specialist, Dr.
Charles Melone at Beth Israel Hospital Singer Division in Manhattan this
morning.
Thomas, 6-9, 235-pounds, completed his ninth NBA season - sixth with New
York - to average 11.1 points, a team-leading 8.3 rebounds and 31.9 minutes
in 80 starts. Since the forward's acquisition in 1998, Thomas has been one
of the most durable players in a Knicks uniform, missing only five games due
to injury, including one this season due to a sore left knee.
Thomas' hand will remain in a cast for the next 4-6 weeks, followed by
rehabilitation to gain back his range of motion. He is expected to be
available for training camp at the start of the 2004-05 NBA season.
