The Celtics and Cavaliers Swap Bench Players
BOSTON, MA - The Boston Celtics announced today that they have acquired
forward Jumaine Jones from the Cleveland Cavaliers in exchange for guard
J.R. Bremer, center Bruno Sundov and a conditional second round draft pick.
"Jumaine is a great competitor and an excellent athlete," said Executive
Director of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge. "He has a tremendous upside
and I look forward to seeing him reach his full potential in a Boston
Celtics uniform."
Jones, now entering his fifth season in the NBA, has spent the last two
seasons with the Cavaliers. In 80 games (12 starts) during the 2002-03
season, the 6-8, 218-pound forward averaged 9.8 points and 5.1 rebounds in
27.5 minutes per game. He was the Cavaliers leading scorer off the bench,
and also set career highs in minutes played, field goals made and attempted,
three-point field goals made and attempted, free-throws made and attempted,
points and scoring average. As a starter, he averaged 14.1 points and 7.6
rebounds in 41.1 minutes per game.
Jones brought his shooting touch to the Philadelphia 76ers during his first
two years in the league, where he helped the team reach the 2001 NBA Finals.
In the 2001 playoffs, Jones started 14 playoff games and played in all 23
contests, scoring 16 points twice. He averaged 7.1 points and 4.6 rebounds
in 23.9 minutes as a starter.
In his four NBA seasons, Jones is averaging 7.0 points and 4.3 rebounds
while shooting .439 from the field.
Jones was originally drafted by the Atlanta Hawks in the first round (27th
overall) of the 1999 NBA Draft. His draft rights were traded to the
Philadelphia 76ers for a future first round pick on June 30, 1999. He was
then traded to the Cavaliers, along with Tyrone Hill, in exchange for Matt
Harpring, Cedric Henderson and Robert Traylor on August 3, 2001.
Bremer was signed by the Celtics as a free agent on July 17, 2002. In 64
games (41 starts) last season, he averaged 8.3 points and 2.6 assists in
23.5 minutes per game. Sundov signed with the Celtics as a free agent on
July 19, 2002 and appeared in 26 games.
