Allen Iverson out for season

/ March 30, 2004

March 30, 2004 - Philadelphia 76ers President and General Manager Billy King announced today that guard Allen Iverson is out for the remainder of the regular season due to persistent pain and inflammation in the right knee.

"In light of where we are in the season, with only eight regular-season games remaining, we thought it best for Allen to rest his knee rather than risk additional problems," King said.

MRI studies have shown no meniscal or ligament damage to the knee. The cause of the inflammation is a small articular cartilage lesion in the trochlear groove of the femur under the patella, as confirmed by MRI studies and examinations by 76ers team physician Dr. Jack McPhilemy and Dr. Russell Warren, who saw Iverson on Monday for a second opinion consultation. Warren is the New York Giants team physician.

"Allen saw Dr. Warren in New York yesterday, who concurs with the diagnosis and treatment of Allen's ailing right knee," McPhilemy said. "Allen has been bothered by recurrent swelling in the right knee going back six weeks, and diagnostic studies have indicated some wear of the cartilage under the kneecap. Dr. Warren believes that this condition is likely to improve with rest and rehabilitation."

Iverson will be reevaluated in two-to-four weeks.
