Default Avery is underrated

Look at Dallas' lineup. They have zero post presence. They lack a legitimate center and PF. They are basically Golden State...

Yet Avery still got this team to 67 wins and a Finals appearance. So why is he getting the heat? He didnt put this team together. If he did, you know he'd have someone that can play on the block.

Dallas have always been pretenders. The fact that Avery got that team to the Finals one season and 67 wins the next is an incredible feat...incredible.

If Dallas lets him go they are gonna regret it.

I totally agree...if Cuban fires Avery, it will be a worse mistake than trading for J. Kidd. Until this season everybody was praising him. You cant fire him for one bad season...He is going to develop into one of the greatest coaches of all time IMO.

I don't think he's underrated. I think he's like Flip Saunders. Very good in the regular season, moderate success in the playoffs, but when the pressure is turned up, things don't work out very well.

Impatient league...win now now now. You dont? You are likely to get replaced with someone who can get the team over the hump. Players have better job security than head coaches.

I'm not sure I buy into the Fire Avery agenda, but I'm also unwilling to give him credit when there's not a whole lot of evidence to support it. Dallas fans, right or not, at least have a credible argument against Avery.

2000-2001: 53W-29L (got to western conference semi-finals)
2001-2002: 57W-25L (got to western conference semi-finals)
2002-2003: 60W-22L (got to western conference finals)
2003-2004: 52W-30L (got to playoffs, out first round)
2004-2005: 58W-24L (got to western conference semi-finals)
2005-2006: 60W-22L (first full year with Avery) (got to the finals)
2006-2007: 67W-15L (got to playoffs, out first round)
2007-2008: 44W-25L (might not make playoffs)

I don't mean to rag on Avery. He's done a lot for the team. But don't overrate him. Dallas was doing just as well in the years before he became head coach. In fact, the core group of players that's done so well for him are largely a creation of Don Nelson's.
