Default Can someone explain what these team names mean?

i know its a dumb thread... but what is:

a clipper
a laker
a supersonic (all i can think is, did they fly concords out of seattle?)
a knick

are they made up or do they actually mean something either in general or to the city the team plays in?

The term "Knickerbockers" traces its origin back to the Dutch settlers who came to the New World -- and especially to what is now New York -- in the 1600s. Specifically, it refers to the style of pants the settlers wore ... pants that rolled up just below the knee, which became known as "Knickerbockers," or "knickers".

Default Re: Can someone explain what these team names mean?

The Clippers name originated in San Diego. There were boats/clippers that came in and out of San Diego harbor.

Not a hundred percent sure, but I think the Lakers were named for the fact that they used to be in Minneapolis, and Minneapolis had a lot of lakes.

Minnsota is known as the Land of a Thousand Lakes…

Just like Land O Lakes Butter…

The Laker franchise started in Minneapolis and was in reference to the regions lakes.

No clue how SuperSonics relates to Seattle

Other teams I'd like to know about…

Trailblazers
Kings (though I think Kansas City has something with "royalty" like the Royals baseball franchise)

The Rockets got lucky. It was originally the San Diego Rockets, the name came from the Atlas Rockets they built in the City for NASA, then they move to Houston where the Nasa actually are. Nice coincidence.
