Tiago Splitter.

That's why they traded Scola.

Financial reasons play a big role.

Look at the Suns. Very good chance of winning it all right? So what do they do. They give away their best defensive big-man in Kurt Thomas for nothing. Why? Money. His salary put them over the cap.

So they are sacrificing a possible championship because of money. Strange, but it happens....

Here are the exact reasons he was traded and in the manner in which he was traded:

1. Spurs couldn't afford him this year.

2. He had to come to the NBA this year or he likely never would have been able to come over because his new buyout clause would have been impossible.

3. The Spurs had insurance in Splitter and Mahinmi.

4. They needed to clear rosters spots so they were able to throw Jackie Butler in.

In short, yes, financial reasons. I don't necessary think this was a bad trade by the Spurs given their situation, but I think the bad move was waiting until it was too late to bring Scola over. They would be damn near unstoppable with him.

I take it those guys are overseas?

Also how was it too late to bring Scola over when the team he played for placed an expensive buyout tag on him the Spurs (from what I read) refused to pay. While this trade may have been financial...I'm curious that even if Spurs had $$$ would they still have Scola because it seemed they were turned off and wouldnt give in to the demands of his buyout. Correct me if I'm wrong tho.

They were classy. They knew that they weren't gonna buy him out, and that a roster spot probably wouldn't show up, so they went ahead and gave him to a team that would buy him out and have a spot.

Tiago Splitter will be here next year. That will be fun!

They traded him so Timmy could abuse scola in the playoffs.

It was a mistake then and a mistake now. I don't understand why they were worried about money, and then paid for Udoka who they aren't even using. Scola is coming off the bench behind Chuck Hayes for crying out loud, he wouldn't have a problem coming off the bench behind Duncan.

Mahinmi is on the team right now they gave Bonner and Oberto 3 year deals and still have Elson and Horry. Splitter will come over next year that left no room for Scola.

Scola was considered the best player overseas. So all that you typed means little. Unless Spurs didnt feel he was. But Scola was a prized prospect.

its very very rare that a player joins the spurs and contributes fully their first year...tony, manu, oberto, finley, barry all played limited minutes their first year with the spurs and then got major minutes their second year.

the buyout was the main reason, salary cap was an issue, but when the spurs drafted tiago splitter they felt that they had a younger version of scola in their hands so they let him walk. spanolious had a large enough contract to void scolas buyout and jackie butlers contract so the trade was made.

also like some have said, if scola didnt come this year his dream of playing in the NBA would have been over. the spurs took a hit but they had promised scola they would get him over here and they delivered. they could have just given him the finger and said tough luck, but thats not what the Spurs organization is about.

that he was, but he is already in his 30s. the spurs scouting staff feel that tiago splitter, who is just 20 years old, will be better and that is why they let scola walk.
