I never understood it as well. Maybe they thought Oberto was better or something?

I think they did it bc they are a class act organization and they know Scola deserved to be in the NBA. But they were not going to buy him out bc they didn't need him. I am pretty sure they didn't really want to trade with the Rockets but there were not too many other options. They knew they have Duncan and would not need him. Also bc of Manu and Oberto they have more respect for Scola and wanted to put him on a good team. Sounds stupid but honestly thats what I believe.

SA got something out of the trade as well, they opened a roster spot and cap space, which will allow them to make a move further down the line.

SA loves foreign players. Scola was about as sure a foreign bet as you can get. They already have 2 other Argentinian players that are close to Scola. They have a need for backup minutes at the 4... Scola wasn't even expensive.

I wondered as well when it first happened. But from what a Spurs fan told me, it was financial reasons. Plus, when was the last time the Spurs made a bad move.

My guess is that since this is Tim Duncan's team, I bet they were concerned on how well they'd play together or get along. It's the only rational explanation.

Why wouldn't Duncan and Scola play well together?

Duncan basically plays center now, Scola can hit the midrange J.

This will be a valid question for as long as Scola is in the NBA.

It made no sense, and never will

I read a while ago that Scola wouldn't come off the bench behind Duncan so the Spurs traded him for cap room. It was some complicated loop hole that will end up saving them a bunch of money.

i think it was that they didn't want to pay his buyout since he had a contract in for another league and i think it was 5 mill but i might be wrong
