Default Baron Davis to opt out???

While lighter around the waist, the Golden State Warriors catalyst would like to be heavier in the wallet - and sooner rather than later. He technically has two years left on his contract, but he has a termination option for the 2008-09 season. He said he wants the matter cleared up before the start of training camp or else he plans to enter free agency next summer.

smart business move by baron.

he can't play better than he did last year... and if he gets injured this season without that extension, he won't get nearly as much cash next summer.

the mistake a lot of these athletes make, not just in basketball, but in any cap-influenced sport, is that there's not always cap room available for every FA on the market...

how much does baron think he's worth? probably STARTING in the $16 mill range... does ANY team have that kinda cash out there to throw at baron? nah...

sooo after re-thinking it over the span of this post, it might not be a good idea... depending on what happens in free agency next summer, i have no clue who has cap space.

It's a good idea to come into camp in good shape after a good season and apply a little pressure on the team to give him an extension. So long as he isn't sitting out games or Vincing it, why not? But I'd be surprised if anyone gives him (or any other pg around 30, and Davis will be 29) a new 16 mil+ per year contract. It's either G State or no one, with the possibility of a sign-and-trade. If he becomes an FA, 10-12 mil per is more realistic.

Nobody expected Rashard Lewis to get that big of a contract, and many people felt Ben Wallace was overpaid at 60 million or so and both of them were free agents, so I don't think it's good to underestimate how much teams could throw money at FAs, especially a player of Davis's talents.
