He did make some valid points....he shouldn't have used the cursing, but I guess he really wanted to convey his feelings on the matter.

Laker fans have really supported this guy through a lot of bad times, he placated them by saying he wanted to be a Laker for life and all that....only to turn around and go back on those words. How many times have we seen people blindly defend Kobe on ISH.

When this whole situation ends with Kobe playing in another uniform....the real losers will be the Laker fans, and I think Mc Donnell is playing the role of fan advocate.

Kobe Bryant went Magic Johnson yesterday. No, he didn't become one of basketball's greatest winners. He did, however, attempt to join the Magic Man in pulling one of the greatest power plays in Laker history--remember Paul Westhead? . He told Ric Bucher of ESPN that he wanted Jerry West back running the Lakers this summer or he wanted to be traded. He recanted a bit in today's Times, saying he wants West back, but if it didn't happen, he didn't want to be traded. Well, whatever the truth is, here are a few facts: Kobe did the right thing...the Lakers won't trade Kobe...and West just might be back with the Lakers.

Kobe's the only Laker with the political capital--and the balls--to make such a demand, and by doing so put the team on notice that he's serious about change. If not, he'll undoubtedly opt out in two years. The Buss family has no choice but to consider bringing West back--and in a position of power. And Jerry just might be interested in a curtain call with Lakers. He has not spoken to ANYONE in the Lakers front office, and will not do so until after July 1, when his Memphis contract runs out. But someone VERY close to West told me that he thinks West will talk to the Lakers about a return. The Lakers are the thing West loves more than anything other than his family, and I know he'd love to turn them into a champion one more time. But Buss can't be cheap--Jerry West was making 8 million a year with the Grizzlies. Certainly, if they can find 10 million a year to pay a coach in on-the-job retirement, 8 million for a true basketball genius should be easy to come up with.........

5-27-2007

In today's LA Times, it was reported that Kobe is still unhappy about the Lakers not making any moves to improve the team. And that he's frustrated that Lamar Odom and Kwame Brown have had--or will have--surgeries that put their ability to be traded in jeopardy. Well, who can blame him? But Kobe's got to realize that there's nothing the Lakers can do until after the Finals and the draft. So, I'm sure he was just expressing frustration that he's sitting home while Derek Fisher and Robert Horry are still playing. But the most startling thing in the Times this morning was my friend Bill Plaschke's column, basically asking the Lakers to trade Kobe. That in verbal sign language, Kobe wants out. Well, that may be so, but if they're entertaining ANY thoughts of trading him, I have some advice--FORGET IT. If you trade Kobe you'll never get equal value--remember Shaq?--and you'll be trading this town's only legitimate superstar other than possibly the Angels' Vlad Guerrero. The fans already hold resentment toward the Lakers for the Shaq fiasco. Getting rid of Kobe would cement their incompetence in the eyes of the fans--and the players. Instead, the Laker front office show grow a set, work 24 hours a day, and find a way to make the team better. It doesn't just have to be KG or Jermaine O'Neal. There's a bunch of other players out there who can improve this team. Mitch Kupchak and company have to identify them and go get them. But trading Kobe is a sillier idea than...oh...trading Shaq. Or Mike Piazza. Or Eric Dickerson. All three of those worked out real well for their former teams, didn't they?

Who the hell is Joe McDonnell and why should I care what he says?

I think Kobe should have waited to see if the Lakers decided to go after O'Neal afterall or make some other move, before demanding a trade, but if he that unhappy with the organization, then I don't have a problem with him demanding a trade.

The fans always feel like they're being betrayed or some crap when a player wants to be traded, but they have to live the life. Some fans just need to get a life, instead of worry about what celebrities are doing what.

I actually think if Kobe ended up in Philly he may end up being even MORE popular, because that's a franchise with some history, his dad played there IIRC, and he's a Philly native, right?

They're rebuilding though, and I doubt they'd get Kobe without giving up AI2.

What people say or right isn't going to determine what Kobe does.
