I know that, both better individuals then players, but what does that have to do with the NBA.

No particular order:

Wilt

Redefined the big man in basketball. Nobody was like him physically at the time, and he put up astounding numbers that have yet to be matched. NBA rules had to be changed to limit his dominance, and the game wouldn't have been the same today without the Stilt.

MJ

The biggest superstar in any sport ever, MJ became a household name, not just in America, but also in many other countries. He brought basketball to new heights, not only on the court with winning 6 rings and dominating like few ever have individually, but being the very face of the NBA and helping the league become a major world wide sports entity. IMO, his fame has helped bring the international influx to the NBA.

Yao Ming

Perhaps no other international player has brought so much attention from his home nation to the league than Yao. Arguments can be made for Sabonis, Petrovic, Divac, Hakeem, and Dirk, all of which are tremendous international stars in their own right, however, Yao is the only major Chinese star in the NBA, and he has captured the heart of his nation of over a billion people.

Shaq

No other big man has had the combination of size, athletic ability, strength, and sheer brute force than Shaq. He helped change the way teams try to win, bringing the Hack-a-Shaq tactic to popular use. Despite his lack of work ethic and polish to his game, he has still been dominating in the years of supreme big men, and won 4 rings, and making the finals with 3 different teams. His personality and character has always been a highlight of the game's lighter side, and is probably the most entertaining thing about him.

Magic/Bird

The Magic and Bird rivarly has been talked about for years, so I really don't have anything new to add to this. Both brought competitiveness and leadership to two dynasties, and were dominating stars in arguably the best era of NBA basketball.

Russell

The anchor of the team with the most dominating run of any NBA team in league history, Bill is considered one of the top defensive players of all time, and IMO, a pioneer at his position. Not only was he the most important player on those fabled Celtic teams, he was also a player/coach, and despite great players comming and going, he always was a winner.

LeBron James

The most hyped player ever to be drafted, Bron set a new standard for high schoolers looking to skip the college game. This contributed to the new rules regarding NBA eligibillity. Bron is also a freak of nature, have an uncanny physical combination of size, speed, and strength in a 6'8'' 240lb frame. His marketability has already launched the young man to earn more than $100 million in endorsements alone, and that number is rising.

Julius Erving

The face of the NBA's rival ABA, Dr J brought style and flash to the game and brought the game above the rim like no other player. He, along with other players of his time, built the foundation of how the game is played above the rim today. The ABA and NBA merged in 76', and the Dr helped popularize the league.

Look at last year's number one pick in the NBA draft.

Look at Darko being drafted as high as he was in the first place.

That's way more important than winning voting contests in the All-Star game IMO

Nicely put, but you forgot Dr.J, who single handedly saved the NBA.

It has to do with international impact more than playing style. There have been 7 footers who can shoot before, but no other player has had the international impact Yao has. Yeah, more teams are looking for big men who can shoot, but that's not just because of Dirk, it's because the game has changed, and that type of player is more valuable.
