Question NBA schedule: is it random?

Obviously not the Christmas Day Game. Oh, and for that matter, neither are the games played on Sundays post-January. BUT other than that...

Is it randomized? Or does a human being sit there and think through "hmmm who should play Monday night?" Or, "should I the Mavs and Suns play their first game against each other in Oct or in Feb?"

You see my point. Is the overall schedule thought out with a purpose, or is it just computer generated, other than the TV games.

Nah, they have to spread out their marquee matchups.

Certain matchups are planned. The rest are done by computer.

it was explained to me once by a guy who worked for the clippers, the scedule is done by the NBA then sent to the teams, the teams and the arenas that they rent from look for conflicts and make requests for adjustments, then it's sent back to the nba where it's final dates are done.

then its sent to the TV networks and they adjust the times to fit their plans and then it's sent back to the nba where it is tweaked some more and then called final...

for some teams that have their own arena they share with nobody it's probably a fairly straight forward deal, but teams like the lakers who share staples with the clippers, kings hockey and the avengers arena football team, i can imagine there is quite a bit of jockeying going on, with plenty of head scatching...

That's what I would've thought too. It's just that their opening day games I always find odd. Their choice of teams on opening day....I don't know..

Good point. And isn't there some team that has to vacate their home arena for like a whole month or something? Something about some damn circus coming to town or something?

the jazz did because of the olympics a few years ago, and the lakers and clippers do because there is some award show there every year and they need staples for a week to prepare...

i always wanted to get clippers tickets and lakers tickets for a weekend when they play the same day like they did last sunday, go to the clippers game and then stay and watch them change the court for the lakers game that evening... last weekend they had the pac 10 tornament on saturday, the kings hockey saturday night, clippers at noon on sunday and lakers at 6 sunday night...i'd hate to work there...

Mavs/Spurs and Bulls/Pistons in Detroit would be a cool doubleheader.

Almost anything but Lakers vs Heat would be better. That matchup has worn thinner faster than Paris Hilton's hymen.

the teams make their schedule based on whats going on at their arena. LIke the Nets and Devils can't be playing at the same time, so they both work their schedules around that. The Spurs have a rodeo at their arena every year so they go on an annual big roadtrip.
