Default Why won't the Knicks Hire Patrick Ewing as head coach..?

I mean what do they have to lose....?

One of the all time greats... NY legend... Been an assistant for like a decade...

If Ewing was head coach he would have instant respect.. More respect for him than 95% of the other head coaches..

Seriously.. What you knick fans think about this??

I have often wondered why Rick Barry and Kareem haven't been offered coaching jobs, as well. Two of the most knowledgeable and intelligent baskteball players of all-time.

Well, that's what the Nets thought they were getting with Jason Kidd.

Magic Johnson was obviously very knowledgeable and intelligent as a basketball player, but as an analysis (and presumably as a coach) he sucks.

I guess some great players just aren't good at coaching.

With that said, Ewing has been a long time assistant, I think he should get a HC gig, especially if the Knicks decide to rebuild. Maybe the GMs are seeing something we're not. From what I recall though, the HC job is usually given to assistant coaches that were defensive specialists for championship teams. See Thibs, Carisle, Dwane Casey etc.

Ewing was part of the magic team that went to the finals

He is a big reason why Dwight is where he is.

it's too loud in the stadiums, players won't be able to understand what he's saying.

Well yes, he helped develop Dwight no doubt. But was he the defensive coordinator of that Magic team? Was he the one that had a system? No, that was SVG.

Hakeem also helped refine Dwight's game, as well as Kobe's.

I am not arguing the first part, but so what? I suspect that there have been many successful coach's in the history of professional sports that were considered jerks. Bill Russell comes to mind, although, to be honest, aside from his Celtic days, he was not a very successful coach.

But Barry and KAJ would be excellent "teachers" as well as intelligent coach's. I don't understand why a lousy franchise wouldn't at least give them a shot.

I am not disagreeing with you. But they just aren't well thought of people outside of the game. Yea, that shouldn't matter, but it's just politics, im sure. Kareem couldn't even sniff a head coaching job. Training Bynum is the closest he really got.

In what regards?

A jerk? CLEARLY.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Russell

Quote:
Russell was driven by "a neurotic need to win", as his teammate Heinsohn observed.[60] He was so tense before every game that he regularly threw up in the locker rooms; it happened so frequently that his fellow Celtics were more worried when it did not happen.[85] He was also known for his natural authority. When he became player-coach in 1966, Russell bluntly said to his teammates that "he intended to cut all personal ties to other players", and seamlessly made the transition from their peer to their superior.[86]

To teammates and friends, Russell was open and amicable, but was extremely distrusting and cold towards anyone else.[60] Journalists were often treated to the "Russell Glower", described as an "icily contemptuous stare accompanied by a long silence".[60] Russell was also notorious for his refusal to give autographs or even acknowledge the Celtics fans, so far that he was called "the most selfish, surly and uncooperative athlete" by one pundit

Quote:
He alienated Celtics fans by saying, "You owe the public the same it owes you, nothing! I refuse to smile and be nice to the kiddies."[60] This supported the opinion that Russell (who was the highest-paid Celtic) was egotistical, paranoid and hypocritical, and even the FBI described Russell in his file as "an arrogant Negro who won't sign autographs for white children".[60] The already hostile atmosphere between Russell and Boston hit its apex when vandals broke into his house, covered the walls with racist graffiti, damaged his trophies and defecated in the beds.[60] In response, Russell described Boston as a "flea market of racism".[92] In King Of The Court by Aram Goudsouzian, he was quoted saying, "From my very first year I thought of myself as playing for the Celtics, not for Boston. The fans could do or think whatever they wanted."[93] After his retirement, he described the Boston press as corrupt and racist; in response, Boston sports journalist Larry Claflin claimed that Russell himself was the real racist.[94] Despite his refusal to sign autographs, he accepted a $250,000 contract to sign 5,000 pieces of memorabilia

Quote:
Russell, who invariably saw himself as a victim of the media, refused to attend the ceremony when his #6 jersey was retired in 1972, or his induction into the Hall of Fame in 1975.[58] While Russell still has sore feelings towards the city, there has been something of a reconciliation;[96] and he has even visited the city regularly in recent years, something he never did in the years immediately after his retirement.[96] When Russell originally retired, he demanded that his jersey be retired in an empty Boston Garden.[

Quote:
Russell's public statements became increasingly militant, so far that he was quoted in a 1963 Sports Illustrated interview with the words: "I dislike most white people because they are people ... I like most blacks because I am black".[60] However, when his white Celtics teammate Frank Ramsey asked whether he hated him, Russell claimed to be misquoted, but few believed it

Russell actually despised the fans of Boston. He even refused to sign autographs for teammates, based on principle. And yet, later in his career, he did so for a sizeable fee.

He was a successful coach for the Celtics, but he had a losing record with the Sonics and Kings (in his last season his team went 17-41.)
