Its not that Lin is a bad point guard like some people make him out to be. He's just not really the best fit for the Rockets based on his strengths. The Rockets' style of play forces him to play off the ball... something he's had to get used to. And he has improved a good bit in that role over the course of last season.
The good thing about having Lin is that if teams shut down Harden, Lin can help fill his role by running the pick and roll instead of Harden, since it is a strength of his, and he can get inside.
So it makes the team more versatile.
