Default Public SportVU revealed

Pretty cool that they finally revealed it to the public. Will get interesting as the season progresses.

They are actually counting stuff like hockey assists, assists leading to FTAs, contested rebounds and shitton of other things.

Sooooo the "new age" baseball stats are called Sabermetrtics (an unfortunate name tabbed by Bill James in honor of the Society of Baseball Research, unfortunate since they are much more than just creating innovative stats), so what should these be called?

I can see it now.

Andre igadoula averages 8 assist per game on only 40 passes per game.

Cp3 averages 13 assist per game however, this is while attempting a league leading 79 passes per game..

So while Cp3 may average more assist, it comes on almost 40 extra passes per game. If Iggy was a pass chucker like Cp3, he would average even more assist on less passes

Iggy is a better point guard than Cp3

Context and usg% explains this. Cp3 has the ball way longerm

Well that's basically assist% which is already available but now we have assists per mile!

It's a hypothetical argument that will be made.

Do you know how usg% works? I haven't a clue but I heard its name is mis leading.

And obviously, IGGY can't orchestrate and offense or handle the responsibilities of a point guard over the course of a game, but these stats while cool will provoke that type of argument.

Just like now when a poster will say player X is a better scorer than player Y because they shoot a higher FG% and if player X was given as many shots as player Y he could replicate those results.

Which of course there's a big difference between being the guy defenses game plan against and the guy who's the 2nd or 3rd scoring option on his team.

Just like there's a big difference from a guy like IGGY who may handle the ball more than most at his position and while he can run your offense for 5 minutes at a time and is good in short spurts he wouldn't be able to handle those duties all game over an 82 game season..

usage rate is just how many possessions you finish, while on the floor.

for example, if you are on the floor for 20 possessions, you take 5 shots, go to the line for 2 FTs, and have a turnover you will have a usage rate of 8/20, or 40%

its a very simple stat

as for idiots misusing the stats, who gives a shit? thats such a pessimistic reason to be down on these stats.

there is a reason that every year teams invest more time and money into statistical analysis.
