Default Jeremy Lins contract

Quote:
The Rockets, figuring they had to come up with some creative scenario to keep the New York Knicks from matching Lin gave him a unique contract where they backloaded his deal, meaning the price for his final third and fourth seasons (fourth is a team option) balloon to around $10 million. Itís apparently not a contract many teams are eager to take on, especially considering the Rockets would like some type of talent in return for Lin.

really? that's a rather large backend contract, rockets were never going to offload that!!!!

8.3 million per season for this and next season - that's the cap hit.

so basically Lin's on a better better contract than most guards in the league bar the elite level superstar guards, that's absurd

What you mean Rockets signing Jeremy Lin to that ridiculous contract was a bad idea?

This is my shocked face:

The Lakers should have taken Asik and Lin in a sign and trade to Houston.
Lin runs MDA's system well. Nash is old now and can't get to the rim and he should be a backup.
Asik can provide some defense and rebounding the Lakers are lacking.
Next year both would be expirers, so if the Lakers wanted to, they could have traded them out if they thought there were better FAs out there.

Why does Houston want to give Lakers assets? Asik/contract is worth a very good starter. Lin's contract at least has positive value.

Dwight gets nothing out of that SnT. He doesn't get more years. He doesn't get more money.

They could have given him more money and an extra year with a sign and trade.

Or the Rockets would have had more cap space to sign Josh Smith to pair along with him. Honestly, I think this was a big factor - the Lakers didn't want to help the Rockets get Smith by taking on Asik and Lin's contracts.

I don't know why the Rockets didn't trade Asik and Lin (or some other pieces) for Smith. Better fit as a help defender for the Rockets than Asik is.

Asik is the same deal. Its not a bad deal considering theyre 2 legit starters in the league. I just dont understand how the cap hit can cost HOU only 8.3 but it would have cost CHI and NY 15 million each respectively.

can someone explain that

The contract is allowed to be backloaded for the t eam matching but for the team acquiring its straig htlined to give teams a mechanism to try to steal players.

And Lins contract is awful, hes a starter in name o nly right now, he barely played in the playo ffs.

For the 50th time this has been brought up, under the new CBA, Dwight can only get 5 years 118m from the Lakers. He get only get 4 years 88m from any other team regardless of whether he is sign and traded or signed outright.

Lin is a good fit for certain teams.
The Bobcats should offer Sessions for Lin.
The Rockets get another 3.3 million to sign another power forward, while the Bobcats get someone who can run the offense and get to the paint.

Are you sure? The way I've read it, its simlar to an NFL contract where the money received and the cap hit are different. I thought the actual money that he's getting is as stated in the OP (5 mil, 5 mil, then $15 mil); however the salary cap hit is even ($8.3 per) each year.

Edit: I'm not so familiar with the site Spotract but according to them I'm right >>>>> http://www.spotrac.com/nba/houston-rockets/jeremy-lin/

Year Base S. Bonus Misc. Cap Hit
2012-2013 5,000,000 - - 8,374,646
2013-2014 5,225,000 - - 8,374,646
2014-2015 14,898,938 - - 8,374,646
