Default Raptors fire executive vice-president Ed Stefanski

In his first move as general manager of the Toronto Raptors, Masai Ujiri thinned out the front office a little bit.

The Raptors have let go of Ed Stefanski, the Raptors’ executive vice-president, a source confirms to the National Post. The news was first reported by Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports. Since October 2011, Stefanski had effectively served as Bryan Colangelo’s second-in-command. Stefanski more or less replaced Ujiri, who left a role as one of Colangelo’s assistants to become Denver’s GM in 2010. He had one more year left on his contract and is one of the few people in the Raptors’ front office whom was not here when Ujiri initially left Toronto.

The move is not a big surprise. Ujiri agreed to come to Toronto from Denver on Friday afternoon, and will undoubtedly want to put his own stamp on the team. However, Stefanski is a solid basketball executive, having previously served as general manager in both New Jersey and Philadelphia. With the Raptors, Stefanski frequently challenged Colangelo. Tim Leiweke initially said Stefanski would be considered for the vacant general manager position after he relieved Colangelo of that job while retaining him as president, but the team’s ability to snap up Ujiri nixed that idea.

Ujiri still has many more decisions to make before he can truly focus on the roster. Many people in the front office, including Marc Eversley, vice-president of college scouting, are under contract. Head coach Dwane Casey is signed through 2013-14, although the contracts of his assistant coaches end on July 1.
