it sounds like some MIT students, who have some beef with americans (possible al quaeda sympathists), learned how to make these bombs and set them off. it wouldn't be hard for them since they would have to be pretty smart if they were indeed from MIT.
they probably worked alone since they couldn't procure more powerful explosives.
