He has established himself as a premier big man in the NBA, and as such, will command a premier salary.

This season, Jefferson made $15 million. Whether the Jazz will choose to retain him for at least that much money over the next few seasons is another matter entirely, and is completely unknown.

It's a no brainer to me at any price. They better not bring him back. Sorry Al!

Quotable: "It could be a totally different Utah Jazz team next year or it could be the same team next year. But one thing I do know about the Jazz — they're smart and have been doing this for a long time. They're always going to make the best decisions."

I wish they always made the right decisions. Won't be the same team next year I'm sure!

This is the second time Millsap has faced a real possibility of leaving Utah, though his departure this time around is much more likely.

Not sure I'd call it more likely. They had to take out a bank loan to keep him last time to match Portland's offer and pay him up front.

Watson's return to Utah is unlikely at best.

I think he or Tinsley could be back. Tinsley should get more interest around the league and leave the Jazz with Watson.

I think they exceeded their potential. Mediocre talent fighting for the playoffs.

Quote:
Indeed, the last remaining piece Utah needs to seriously contend is a premier point guard, which is a luxury the Jazz have missed ever since Deron Williams' departure.

Contend for what? They need star power and a go to guy. They need defense. Their young guys have a lot of potential but still plenty of question marks some of which should start getting answered next year.

Quote:
by his own admission, Williams was never 100 percent down the stretch for the Jazz.

If Utah wants the former NBA All-Star back on its roster, it won't likely have to pay $8.5 million, but Williams will still be a commodity under significant demand. The alternative is to find a point guard besides Williams on the free-agent market, to trade for a point guard or to draft a point guard.

Of those three options, the most likely is to find a point guard on the market should Williams not return.

They need a vet. Possibly Mo. They also need a young guy.

General manager Dennis Lindsey said on Thursday that “Frankly, the conversations and arrows on April 18 have to be pointed at us on why we fell short from a personnel standpoint and what we’re going to do going forward.”

“Us” meaning he and vice president Kevin O’Connor.

Lindsey didn’t stop there, saying even some of the game’s legendary coaches couldn’t have done better at managing nine free agents and the long-term injury absence of Mo Williams.

“From a management standpoint of playing time, if you just took Ty Corbin’s name off the head coaching ledger, and put any coach up there — John Wooden, Jerry Sloan, Gregg Popovich, Rudy Tomjanovich, Jeff Van Gundy – all coaches I’ve dealt with before – you (media) guys would be asking the same questions and the fans and the talk shows and the blogs would have the same complaints, because it wasn’t a perfect alternative.”

Earlier in his remarks, Lindsey admitted mistakes, saying, “(Corbin’s) not the perfect coach, I’m not the perfect GM, we’re not the perfect organization, so what we’re gonna do next week is get in a room together and take gloves off and get real honest with each about where we fell short.”

I agree. You can't just blame the coach or the players. It's a group effort. To think things would be much different with Jerry is funny. I had many of the same complaints about him that I hear about Ty but unlike with Ty nothing would have changed with Jerry. Ty is growing and making adjustments still.

Some more insight into what next season might look like.

Quote:
Indiana’s Paul George became the first player from the 2010 Draft to be selected to an All-Star team, but Favors and Hayward may become the first from that draft to take over a franchise.

"Three years have come and gone," Hayward said, "so it’s time to step up."

But if the Jazz lose Paul Millsap and Al Jefferson to free agency, Favors and Hayward will become the faces of the franchise, while the other young players will fill in key roles. General manager Dennis Lindsey is high on all of them.

What worries me is that everyone still seems to see Favors as better than Kanter.

Quote:
"I think we can build a defense around Derrick Favors’ talent," Lindsey said. "I think Gordon Hayward and Alec Burks can take the ball and get creative. I think Enes Kanter can really score. I think Jeremy Evans can finish."

When the Jazz cleaned out their lockers at EnergySolutions Arena on Thursday, they left tasks for the summer. Favors said he would work more on his offensive moves. Hayward left with a challenge from Lindsey and coach Tyrone Corbin to become a vocal leader.

"It’s going to be fun to watch Gordon take over as a leader," veteran point guard Earl Watson said. "I think he has everything it takes to be a leader, because he’s proven it. He took Butler to the national championship game and almost beat Duke."

Quote:
Of Hayward, Corbin said: "He’s been getting a better understanding from the first year he was here to last year to this year. How he can carry us on the offensive end, how he can make plays for us on the defensive end."

Of Favors and Kanter, and whether they’re ready for starting roles, he said: "They’re better. We’ll see where it goes, if that’s where things end up then they’ll be ready to go."

I think people make to much out of starting. I don't want to see all of them starting together yet. I want to see vets mixed in. Hayward has had success off the bench the past two years. Favors and Kanter should be broken up and unless Millsap or another offensive vet is signed than Kanter needs to start becasue of his offensive prowess. Minutes are what is important. A 3 big man rotation gives everyone plenty of minutes especially if Millsap is back playing some 3. Same with the wing especially since I see G as a point forward and Burks also a capable lead guard. I could see those two both starting with a veteran combo guard.

Quote:
The challenge the Jazz front office faces, is finding the right mix of veterans to fill out a roster around the young nucleus it believes is good enough to get the Jazz back to prominence. But doing that in a single offseason could prove challenging.

Yes especially for a franchise that doesn't like change.

Quote:
The draft, in which the Jazz will have two first round picks, is not considered particularly deep. Neither is the free agent class.

The returning young players will have enhanced roles, but it won’t necessarily come with immediate success. It’s a direction the Jazz are willing to go in exchange for long-term benefit.

"If the best alternative is to go young and be very young with the [financial] flexibility we’ve built," Lindsey said, "I’m not afraid to do that."

You still have to have a balance of vets and youth. You see the difference in Washington this year with the addition of vets.

Quote:
Before Jefferson left the arena Thursday, maybe for the last time as a member of the Jazz, he was asked about the future of a Jazz team led by Hayward and Favors.

"Sky’s the limit," he said.

The Jazz hope so.

http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/jazz/56...-role.html.csp

Some more from G.

Quote:
I’m looking forward to the challenge, stepping up to more of a leadership role."

The morning after the season ended, Hayward addressed a few of the pressing needs facing the Jazz, as two-thirds of the roster barrels toward free agency. Asked about those changes, he said: "Everybody’s wondering that, players included. It’s going to be an interesting offseason." Those remaining, including him, Favors, Enes Kanter, Alec Burks, Jeremy Evans and Marvin Williams, and whoever joins them, must correct the problems of the past:

• "We’ve got to get better on the road," Hayward said. "We played pretty well at home, but, for whatever reason, we didn’t have the same toughness on the road. That comes from us as players. It’s something we can get better at."

• "You want to compete for championships, and the best teams are real good defensively," he said. "Their rotations are really solid … whether the offense is going or not, the defense has to be there to keep us in games."

• "Execution down the stretch," he said. "That’s what good teams do."

As for his own improvement, Hayward said he’ll work out mostly at home in Indianapolis, including a couple of hours of skills refinement in the morning, two hours of lifting afterward, and two hours of open gym at night. Two areas of concentrated personal focus: shooting and ball handling.

He’s fully aware he has to elevate his own game. He thinks he can become an All-Star. But his heavy call now is to make sure everybody’s game is lifted.

"Hopefully," he said, "we can round up some of the younger guys and put some work in over the summer to prepare us for next season. We all have to get better."

I'll be happy if we get a full season from him finally. He's ended the past 3 seasons strongly but hasn't been consistent throughout the year especially his shooting.

For the fifth-straight year, the Jazz organization will send a squad of youngsters and NBA hopefuls to the Orlando Pro Summer League, General Manager Dennis Lindsey confirmed.

Dates haven't been announced, but that summer event will take place in early July at the Amway Center's practice court.

Jazz rookie Kevin Murphy and late-season pickup Jerel McNeal are among the likely invitees, and it wouldn't be surprising if Enes Kanter made an appearance while rehabbing from his left shoulder injury.

I wouldn't mind seeing Hayward and Favors at least in camp. They could still use it. Evans should play.

Quote:
Last summer, DeMarre Carroll, Alec Burks, Jeremy Evans, Kanter, Blake Ahearn, John Millsap, and Michael Stockton were on Utah's roster.

Would like to Stockton back. He was impressive. Maybe Elijiah Millsap this time around.

Quote:
Burks was named to the All-Summer League team, thanks to an average of 17.2 points. Kanter averaged 8.8 rebounds for the 3-2 Jazz squad.

If the Jazz keep their three draft picks (14th, 21st and 46th), those players would also likely participate.

The NBA puts on a summer league in Las Vegas, which ultimately led to the Rocky Mountain Revue's demise after its run from 1984-2008. Since 2009, the Jazz have preferred to attend the more intimate Orlando event, which isn't open to the public but televises all of the games.

Along with the Jazz, the Heat, Rockets, Nets, Celtics, Pistons, Pacers, Thunder, 76ers and Magic are expected to participate in Orlando's 2013 summer league, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

The Orlando Pro Summer League is also reportedly considering a tournament structure with pool play and a championship game instead of just having teams play five times in consecutive days.

2013-14 PRESEASON: The Jazz previously announced that they'll play Portland in Boise on Oct. 11 in an exhibition game. Turns out, Utah will also face the Lakers twice in the exhibition season — on Oct. 22 at Staples Center and on Oct. 25 in Anaheim, Calif. The full preseason schedule will be released this summer.

Looks like CP3 plans on being back in LA. No surprise. He is right though. They won't be able to afford to keep Bledsoe or keep him happy coming off the bench even if they did pay him He will become available as soon as Paul signs.

If Jennings’ bravado about playing the Heat has rankled any of his teammates, they aren’t acknowledging it — at last publicly. Redick: “I would assume every player should have that attitude, that you’re going to win the series. I mean you never go into a series thinking you’re going to lose the series, that your goal is to lose the series.” Racine Journal-Times

Blesdoe isn't a free agent to next year right? Would have to trade for him? Maybe the Jazz can tempt the Clippers with one of their draft picks. Gets the Jazz a quality starting PG, Clippers get another rookie scale deal and hopefully someone who can contribute, especially since they'll be capped out when Paul signs and have guys like Barnes, Billups, Odom and Turiaf as free agents.

He'll be in the last year of his rookie deal. Same as G and Favors. Could get real expensive in a hurry if they have to dole out big money to all of them at the same time. Jazz could also take on contracts like Butler or Willie Green with their cap space.

Willie Green has a team option and it's only $1.3 million, so I doubt they'd be able to get anything better any cheaper and if they don't want him they can cut him. Butler would be the obvious choice at $8 million if they wanted to cut salaries, which is a realistic proposition with their owner. Clippers basically will have all their salary tied up in their version of the Big 3 with Griffin, Paul and Jordan with Crawford on a MLE deal and a bunch of minimum deals to fill out the rest of the roster. It'd leave them thin in the 3 spot, but i'm sure the Jazz could send back Evans or Carroll in return who don't make more than a few million?

OK. The site I looked at had something by his years so I wasn't sure with him. Deandre is the other one but I wouldn't take him!

I think Crawford has some option too?

Jazz might draft a young wing at the 21st slot that could look good to the Clipps as well as Evans. Murphy and McNeal would be nice for a team in a trade with non-guaranteed deals. Their first pick who should be a pg/combo guard could be expendable too if they got Bledsoe not to mention Burks, who I wouldn't want to see go

They also have their 2nd round pick and future picks to throw in as well as the TPE they'd get for the Jazz taking on salary and Tomic's rights. Carroll would have to be a sign and trade. Getting another team involved so they could unload Marvin would be sweet.

Butler is an expiring contract so I could certainly see the Jazz doing it. His money could go to paying the kids next summer. I think he'd be a good fit too. Start him with Burks or Hayward. He can handle the ball. Pass. Shoot. He's not the player he was before his injury in Dallas but a nice vet that should fit better than Marvin or Foye.

Clippers sources have been adamant that they don’t have to do anything with Bledsoe until next summer or at the earliest the trade deadline in February of 2014. Combine that with Paul’s history of injury, there is concern about liquidating such a low cost and productive player too soon, but it is clear that if the Clippers chose to, they could fetch a nice return on Bledsoe and that might become important once Paul inks his new deal this summer. HoopsWorld

They'll be listening to deals no doubt!
