Default What exactly was the downfall of the Lakers organization?

Winners of 2 championships in the last five years. Making the playoffs every year. Then the next year, get swept by the Mavericks. Last year the Thunder was acceptable. But this year, sign Howard and Nash and the playoffs are in question? How is this possible? Don't blame the injuries. No Phil Jackson?

Where exactly did the organization go wrong when 2 championships were won and a 3 peat was the goal?

I won't say Kobe but kobe. Even Phil said the boy was uncoachable so do you expect Mike to be able to coach him or tell him what to do? Kobe runs the team and if you want someone to blame you have to blame the top dog right?

I was just thinking the same thing this morning. I don't watch the lakers often...Maybe 3 games this whole season and they played well. But you look at this roster on paper and it looks insanely good. I know this is talked about a length on these boards, and figured there would already be a post about it on any random day, but could someone who is not trolling explain why they aren't as dominant as expected?

Further, when I thought about this team I thought:

1) Dwight will own the post as he can't be doubled team with this starting 5, if he does get doubled the other 4 guys on the court can shoot it.

2) Nash should lead the league in assists and have wide open threes all day. I just picture 3-4 easy lobs to Dwight a game. Further he has his coach from Phoenix that knows him real well and will make sure the offense runs though him.

3) Kobe, although older, is still one of the best SG in the game and doesn't have to carry the load.

4) Best starting 5 (if not top 3) on paper.

5) With the Center of opposing teams always on Dwight Gasol should have a mismatch and be able to post against most other teams.

Are these all untrue? What am I missing.

Preseason expectations were based on the reputations of players (Gasol, Howard, Nash) who failed to live up to the hype this season. I would give them a pass due to injuries out of their control but you explicitly said you didn't want to hear any excuses for injuries.

Lack of depth + old players is a bad combination.

Off court: Jimmy Buss, idiot picked Brown & Antoni over Phil & Adelman.

On court: way too many injuries, just too many. Kobe is the only reason they have a shot at da playoffs

Even if they do make the playoffs this season, the future doesn't look bright for them.
They won't suck, but the roster is old, and the Lakers won't be contenders for a long time, which by LA standards is being crap.

When Shaq left the organization didn't even reach the playoffs one year and they were first round fodder 2 years in a row before getting Gasol and getting to the Finals. Yeah now they have Dwight if he resigns and the potential to be good if they get good players. Almost everybody wants to live in Cali so I don't think there's going to be a shortage of players.

Plus Lebron coming to the Lakers so the future is bright for this franchise.
