He's not retiring next year.

Its going to be interesting to see how his goal to climb the all-time scoring list matches with the Lakers' vision of the future.

What's your boy even doing right now that's impressive? His stats are pretty empty. All I see is a bunch of shot jacking performances and he ain't even leading his team to the 8th seed

Man, if I could give you some rep points, you would have gotten like 50!! What you said about Kobe is so on point. I read some of the books written about Kobe, good and bad, and what always stuck out to me in all of those books was he wanted to get better and he did. He felt that being a 13th pick in the '96 Draft folks doubted him. He could have rested on his basic God given talent and been ok with just getting by and cheating life. Nope he wanted to prove to the all-time greats, Shaq, the Karl Malone, Jordan, Kareem, and Magic...that he belonged in the League.

Kobe is among the all-time greats. Hands Down!!!!

Sad day when he steps down.

I think he is retiring if doesn't win a ring next year, only thing that brings him back is defending a ring.

Its going to be interesting. I highly doubt he will retire. He's still playing great, he does have a legacy to play for (equal or surpass Jordan, Magic, Kareem in rings, and go for the scoring record so he can create the perception that he has an argument for GOAT, not to mention distance himself more away from Lebron), doesn't seem like he's lost the passion for the game, and he's still probably worthy of a big payday. And lets face it, how often does a superstar ever retire when they say they might after they first bring it up? Whenever a player says or a rumor comes up for the FIRST TIME that a player might retire after a certain season, he almost never retires after that. Jordan came back, Hakeem, Ewing, and Barkley stayed around for the money, Malone left his team to try for a ring, Shaq for years said he wouldn't embarrass himself and stay around for too long and then did exactly that, and KG, Duncan, Nash, and Kidd all this past year contemplated retirement and then signed 3 year deals.

He's not retiring. However, I can easily see Kobe announce he will be returning after next year, and then the Lakers either lowball him on an extension (under $20 million/year) or just tell him to wait till next offseason so they can assess how the team does with him next year and they can keep their options open with cap flexibility in 2014 to get someone like Lebron, Love, etc. And I don't know if you could really blame the Lakers for that.

They're barely going to finish above .500 this year, Kobe hasn't gotten along so smoothly with the new superstar Dwight Howard, he will be 36 going into that offseason and they will have flexibility. Why exactly would they decide this offseason to risk the chance of things not getting any better two years from now when they probably would get worse if they go this route, even though they may have a chance to better build for their future with the cap flexibility?

I' telling you, I have a feeling its going to get ugly, and he might go somewhere else. The only way it doesn't, is if maybe Kobe is realistic and already assumes all of this and actually will just decide to wait for next offseason for talks of an extension so they can avoid the drama and embarrassment, and either get a big payday if they can't sign anyone else or without much of a say just quietly take a significantly lower paying contract if they can (and probably will).
