He's not big nor strong enough to play the 4, and he's not quick enough to play the 3.

I don't think a player hitting jumpers qualifies as having a lot of offensive potential. Question: Does Derrick have any defensive upside/skills? Has he shown improvement with his D? And also, can he create for himself offensively?

Derrick is a more talented player but Tristian Thompson will be better due to the fact he has a true position and plays far more to his strenghts on a consistant basis.

Derrick will have more games where he might blow you away and just go off for like 25+ but TT will always be more consistant and reliable.

Tristan Thompson is the better player. He's averaging a double-double since Varejao went down with an injury.

Where one sees spurts showing great potential others see inconsistent play.

Williams is at a point where he should be establishing his style of play, and he hasn't done that on a consistent basis. Its not hard to occasionally put up big numbers on lottery teams (Willie Burton dropped 50 for the Sixers before), many nights you don't get the other team's best effort.

Consistency is the key, and Thompson has been reliable and steadily getting better.

Its ironic that messageboard hacks can see that Williams is a great 4 but the Wolves and all the guys who are paid to study the game don't act on it. If he was a great 4, he would have made a spot for himself and they'd find a way for him to play more 4. Teams don't sleep on assets, and the Wolves would love to trade another black asset for a white guy.

Would you reduce Kevin Love's minutes when Love is healthy to see what Derrick Williams can do?

hes a pretty explosive athlete for a PF, and only a little undersized, and like i said he can shoot a bit. not many guys have his athletic ability and shooting.

im not saying hes def going to reach his potential, his feel for the game, and overall attitude arent very good, but he clearly has some great tools.

Im not sure if you are being sarcastic or if you are actually asking a question. Im going to go ahead and answer it.

Derrick is a average to above average defender. He is quick and strong but is not a powerhouse and he can get bullied by the bigger PF's such as Randolph. He played excellent D today against Ryan Anderson. As long as the guy isn't a lot bigger than him then he is a good defender.

Yes he can create for himself. Offensively he can do pretty much everything aside from hit is ft's consistently (70% for a skilled player is low in my opinion). His mid range J is money, he can shoot the 3 and has gotten very good at drawing fouls. He is also extremely athletic.

Im not sure where this inconsistency point is coming from? He has backed up Love for most of his career so hasn't played a lot. The last month or 2 since he has been starting he has consistently put up around 18 and 8.

Tristan is still a good player but he is solid. Williams can become a star.

Here's a interesting question for those who would like to answer... If Tristan Thompson and Derrick Williams switched teams , what would their stats and impact on the team be like?

good question , it depends on the situation and how well they are playing. If Kevin is playing poorly they might bring in Derrick , but if Kevin love is playing like he was before he got injured(allstar player) im sure Adelman wont give derrick williams many minutes..and also dante cunningham could take minutes away from derrick because of defence.

The problem with Williams, from what I've seen, is that he doesn't seem to have a natural position in the NBA. He was a beast in college playing primarily as a 4, using his athleticism around the rim. He is just not big enough to play PF in the NBA.

At the same time, his perimeter skills don't seem to be quite good enough to shine as a 3 in the NBA. He is a classic tweener.

Thompson is just 21 and he's averaging a double-double with potentially elite level defense down the road. At this stage, I really don't see the argument for Williams.
This. Thompson could develop into an All Star caliber player and has surprising quickness and agility for a guy his size.

He's a 4 who is big enough to play the 4. All he has to do is strengthen in the offseason. He's a 4, without any question.

People must have forgotten that he was backing up the best PF in the game all of last season and was backing him and Cunningham up again this season until roughly a month or two ago. Since then he has been straight up balling. Can shoot, put it on the floor and is extremely athletic. He can rebound and plays very well with Ricky.

Tristan looks solid but doesn't have the upside that Williams has.

I'm waiting for Williams to break out and I think he has tons of potential but too reliant on Rubio. Without Rubio his stats are pitiful but with Rubio they seem to be a great match. Williams seems to run the floor well with Rubio and rubio usually sets him up
