Default Why did Larry Bird shoot sub-30% from 3pt range for 4 straight seasons?

From 1980-84.

Makes no sense. Was there some sort of hand or arm injury that threw off his shot?

He was above 40% his rookie season and then fell off all those years before returning to 40% glory.

This is just a total guess:

rookie year numbers based on few attempts. in 80-84, the 3 wasn't really "part of the game" yet, something everyone planned and practiced for. Plurality of those attempts were probably desperate heaves and his MO remained a midrange jumpshooter and post scorer. Then, like everyone, he got used to the 3 ball by 84 and really made it part of his game.

How's it sound? I remember reading his books as a kid. He would always talk about the 3 as this really impossibly long-seeming shot.

He attempted 143 his rookie season. The next 4: 74, 52, 77, and 73. He was focusing on other aspects of his game and even though he was attempting far fewer, he wasn't hitting the ones he was taking.

It's way harder to put up a high % when you take so few. That's like one a game. That means they were desperation shots and he just didn't shoot them.

When a player doesn't take many 3 pointers, their percentage suffer. I made a thread about this that got deleted by the mods.

Look at Kobe a few weeks ago when he wasn't shooting that many, he totally lost his rhythm.

Look at Jordan the first season that he decided to make the three pointer part of his game, he shot a better percentage than all but one of Kobe's 16 seasons. Not counting Kobe's rookie year since the line was short.

Bingo. When you have the ball in your hands all the time, it means you're the one getting it with 3 seconds left on the shot clock, and have to heave whatever you can heave. Those usually miss.

This. The league has become more of a drive and kick league since then. No handchecking + introduction of zones makes it easier to get by the initial defense but harder to get by the secondary/help defense but it leaves the perimeter more wide open.

Perfect answer. Look at the attempts and numbers of those days. The early years of the 3pt shot. Nowadays teams rely on it, which I don't like. You live and die by it as they say.
