Is there a difference between 2005 Amare and slim Shawn Kemp?
You may have to look him up on youtube, but Amare was a very explosive player in 05 before his micro-fracture surgery. And Shawn Kemp was very explosive before he got fat during the 99 lockout.
Do you see any difference between them? Was one better than the other?

Kemp seemed to actually understand the basic fundamentals of playing defense. Giving the correct effort he could be not a liability on the defensive end. Amare can put forth all the effort in the world on defense, he's still a liability because he seems to lack the basic fundamentals of the defensive game.

Not really. Kemp was a fouling machine. He led the league in total fouls three times in his career and basically averaged 4fpg throughout his prime. There is a reason he never played more than 35.1mpg in any season of his career...and that's because he couldn't stay on the court because he was always in foul trouble. There is no doubt he was a better defensive player than Amare but Shawn Kemp was always a low IQ basketball player.

People are really overrating Shawn Kemp. He was a fantastic athlete with a horrible basketball IQ...and IQ in general. The way the guys life has gone is enough to show you that, but he wasn't exactly basketball smart either. He was clearly a player lived off on his physical gifts and not intelligence or hard work.

I don't really agree. He played too aggressively but he wasn't low IQ. And he was a very good defender. He may have gotten into foul trouble but he was a strong defender in the post and in man situations. He was quick on rotations and a solid help defender, also a great shot-blocker.

During Kemp's time in Portland, I remember seeing him make a few pretty incredible passes. I was too young during his prime to really remember if that was a part of his game or not back then.
I don't know if I've ever seen Amare make any kind of pass that made me go "wow."

But remember, Amar'e was never taught defense in his life

better than the amar'e who put 40 on tim duncan for the series?
remember amar'e was 25/8 two years ago, he averages 21/9 for his career.
that's basically kemp's peak numbers.
amar'e dominance on offense clearly outweighs whatever advantage kemp has on d (as stated before, kemp was a foul prone knucklehead on d).
