Default NBA players obligated to "try" to win championships? Can players play for fun?

LeBron got me thinking about this, even though he just won a championship. He received a lot of hate for having his friends hanging around all the time in Cleveland, and for "abandoning" the team before they won a chip. He then left to Miami to apparently have more fun and play with Wade and Bosh. He was, and has always been, a playful goofball on and off the floor. I'm not saying he isn't competitive, but it seems to me that he just loves to have fun and play the game, and happens to be so skilled that he is dominating the league.

It reminded me of myself when I play games. I like the game, but I'm not overly concerned with winning, feel good about winning, or have a desire to show that I'm better than someone. I don't feel good about making someone else feel like they've lost. It's more about the game itself, and the comradery that comes with playing with a team.

Of course players have egos and worry about their image, but that comes with the attention they receive in the first place.

Back to the question at hand: are players obligated to try to win championships? From a business standpoint, teams want success, no doubt, but is the drive always to win? Obviously not all players have the mentality of Jordan or Kobe, to be "the best" or dominate other players.

Is it okay for a player to play the game for fun, while doing their best to achieve a victory, BUT not actually care about winning? Does playing for fun defeat the purpose of a sport?

Of course the game itself is a competition even if you are playing for fun, but should the focus be on fun or competition/victory? Is a team/player robbing their fans of something by playing for fun, if the fans are rooting for victory?

You have to love or at least like your job, LeBron loves playing so more power to him.

NBA players have the opportunity to choose with whom they can work, while most of us in the real world don't have that luxury.

If I was LeBron I would've done the same thing too.

And it is still a job despite being a game or sport. The name of the game in any job is to generate revenue. To do so, you have to give fans what they want as they are the paying customers.

Some enjoy merely watching players play spectacular basketball with winning coming second. Others (most IMO) want to win.

Players have to cater to paying fans and I think winning is the most important thing. As a fan personally winning is fun. Winning as the underdog is the most fun.

If you play competitive basketball, it's to win. If you don't have a drive to win or to help your team win, you shouldn't be playing professional sports.

Imagine if someone was so good that all they cared about was "having fun" yet still won big at the same time.

I don't think there's anything wrong with playing just for the fun of it so as long as it leads to success and pleases your bosses. But if playing for fun equates to losing all the time, it's time to reevaluate your approach.

I don't even know if this is possible. Vince Carter might have been the closest to achieving this lol

You absolutely have to play to win. Playing for fun is for kids. These guys are pros. They are paid to win.

I have fun playing whether or I win or lose... but it's definitely more rewarding to win.

And someone else made the comment that players are paid to win. That. I don't always love my job, but I'm paid well because I do it well and my bosses expect that excellence. I can't just mess around "on the court" and have fun. I need to "play to win" because that's what's expected, and why I'm employed.
