Default Amount of Stock Put in Legends' Opinions

People on here, especially of late, have been popping up with threads about what ______ legend thinks about current players vs past players, this era vs. their era, etc. Even worse is the fact that people are using these legends' opinions as PROOF of something

"Jordan says..."
"Magic says...."
"Bird says...."
"Barkley says..."
"Malone says..."
"Russell says..."

usually followed by some emoticon like declaring a victory

Not saying their opinions are invalid. If you ask them about THEIR OWN experiences, that's one thing. Ask Magic who the most difficult players were to guard. Ask Barkley who the best rebounder he ever went against was. Ask Jordan who talked the most trash. But leave it at their own experiences from their own era.

One thing's been proven time and time again: PEOPLE WILL PROTECT THEIR OWN GENERATION. Hell go outside of sports. Ask people what the best era for music is. People who grew up in the 60s will say the 60s. People who grew up in the 80s will say the 80s. People who grew up in the 90s will say the 90s. Ask people about today's cartoons vs. the ones when they were growing up. They will always say the ones from their era are best.

Basically, if you're asking people to compare their era vs. a past era, they will (at least 9 times out of 10) protect their era. Of course Magic says Bron would lose to MJ 10 times out of 10. Of course Jordan says players from now couldn't make it in his era. But can we PLEASE stop posting these interviews from legendary players like their a source or proof of anything?

I don't think anyone puts any stock in what Jordan has to say. KwamAAY Brown...that's all.

Oscar Robertson said LeBron James was better than Jordan like 4 years ago. Just because a legend said it doesn't automatically make it true.

If the troll agrees with the legend it's gospel. If they disagree it's garbage.

I refuse to agree or disagree with the premise of this thread until Jeff has given his take.

I anxiously await my new opinion.

This is the only part I take somewhat seriously. Barkley saying things like McHale was the toughest to guard is great.

You just always have to remember that the players are going to:

A. Protect themselves.
B. Protect their generation.
C. Have personal bias against guys due to grudges and threats to legacies.

They basically do the same shit all of the tards on ISH do. Overrate to make a point or underrate because of personal reasons.

That's one reason I love Open Court. The topic will be something like 'Best Handles' and then a bunch of guys who've played over the last 30 years just talk about players they like. When you get into ranking and shit that's when it falls apart.

Ranking is ridiculous. There have been so many good players over the years -- how can anyone come up with a top 5?

When someone says a player from our era is in the top 5, or top 10 all-time players.. who does that bump out? It's like the eternal struggle between people wanting to believe they're witnessing the best the sport has ever had to offer vs people that want to hold on to the past

I don't consider the opinions of legends truths set in stone. They are subject to the same rules of logic and should be viewed with the same critical spirit as the opinions of the rest of the world. If Pat Riley never decided (and was never helped) to become a coach, nobody would ever pay a damn about his opinion, because who would care what some random scrub player from the 70's would think...Basketball IQ on court should not be confused with any other type of intelligence, including basketball intelligence outside the court.

Basically a damage control thread cause every legend has been saaying kobe over bron. A thread that op wouldn't have made if they were stating the opposite.

Jerry West: "LeBron>Kobe".

In 2009.

Oscar Robertson seems to think LeBron is the best ever. Larry Bird implied LeBron had one of, if not the the best playoff runs ever last year
