Default Doug Collins to replace Michael Wilbon on NBA Countdown

http://thebiglead.com/2013/09/07/mic...-former-coach/

Quote:
Michael Wilbon’s Role on NBA Countdown to be Diminished, Replaced on Set by Former Coach

Michael Wilbon’s role on ESPN’s NBA Countdown will be diminished next season, and taking his spot on the set will most likely be former 76ers coach Doug Collins, multiple sources told The Big Lead.

The move is primarily so that Wilbon can return to focusing on the show that made him a star, Pardon the Interruption. In recent years, Wilbon has increasingly appeared on PTI via remote – from Chicago, Miami, Los Angeles, Arizona, etc – diluting some of the outstanding chemistry he’s built up with longtime friend Tony Kornheiser.

Wilbon’s frequent travel has also led to PTI replacing him with Bob Ryan or J.A. Adande, and the end result of both of those factors is that ratings for the show have sagged in the last two years, sources say.

An ESPN spokesman told The Big Lead, ”We’re still in the process of finalizing our commentator plans for this season.”

On the dip in PTI ratings, ESPN stressed the show is “a great performer with a loyal following.”

The rest of the 2012-2013 Countdown cast – Bill Simmons, Jalen Rose and Magic Johnson – has notified ESPN they will return to the show.

Wilbon will still appear on NBA Countdown occasionally, but his seat on the set will be filled by a former NBA coach, and Collins is currently the leader. Two other coaches are in the mix, but Collins has reached the negotiating stage, sources tell The Big Lead.

Collins has extensive TV experience, from NBA on NBC to NBA on TNT. One source says Collins still wants to be a game analyst, and will occasionally do that for ESPN. But his primary role will be on the set.

This will be the second straight year ESPN Countdown has juggled the cast. Last summer, the show added Simmons and Rose … and tried to add Stan Van Gundy before David Stern nixed it.

Doug Collins belongs in the booth. He should be ESPN/ABC's #1 color man along with JVG. ESPN's studio show is an abomination and nothing can save it. Collins' talents will be completely wasted on it.

I disagree. Wilbon was neither a former player like Magic/Jalen nor an NBA historian/obsessive fan like Bill. He had the least credibility by far on that set, a snoozing vanilla personality and had pretty much nothing interesting to say. I still don't know why he wasn't the set-up man of that show ala Ernie Johnson. Why Jalen?? Talk about a bizarre move. It's fine on PTI, but who remotely cares about Wilbon's analysis when he's surrounded by NBA players?

Back to Collins, he's too good to be stuck inside a studio. Honestly, if he wants to be an analyst, he should instantly become ESPN's #1 guy, with JVG demoted to #2 and Hubie #3. And Collins/JVG should team up with Breen for the conference finals and finals. Of course, ideally, given how dismal TNT's current state of color men is(Kerr and Miller being the main guys ), I would prefer Collins to go back to TNT.

Ernie is a different breed and the entire tone of the shows are even more different. Wilbon didn't need to input his opinion, he just needed to moderate. That, I believe he is perfectly capable of doing.

The problem is the group of inarticulate buffoons surrounding him.

Ultimately, he is still nothing more than a moderator - which is what a non-former player should be. ESPN making Wilbon the analyst and Rose the moderator was bizarre. I still don't know how they came to that decision. If you've never played or coached the game, you have no business being an analyst on a pre/post game show.

Wilbon just sat there like a fat toad, glad he's gone, but he was not the problem. The rest of the guys were the problem. They replaced the wrong guy.

This times 10 thousand. Their crew/coverage is just horrible. TNT's crew seems like a bunch of friends sitting around talking basketball, having fun, joking. ESPN and ABC's crews seem like they're each giving their own book report where they stare awkwardly into the camera and then they all discuss what each person just said. No chemistry, no humor, nothing.

Jalen Rose on camera is the worst I've ever seen any person do at their profession. This include Applebees waiters, Target cashiers, improv comedians, bank tellers, cartoonists, anything

JVG is the ONLY entertaining thing about the Disney family's coverage of NBA

Come on now. Should have taken Jalen Rose off and added Collins. Wilbon was a good moderator, but Stuart Scott is still a G. Doug should have went to TNT though.

So the show isn't going to have any moderator? What a train wreck that's going to be.
