Default Anderson Varejao won't play again in 2012-13 season

Cavaliers center Anderson Varejao will miss the remainder of the season after developing a blood clot in his lung, the team announced Monday. Varejao, who recently had knee surgery and was expected to miss 8-10 weeks, will require treatment with blood thinners because of the clot, which was discovered last Thursday. "Clearly, our players' health is our top concern and we are disappointed for Anderson, and his family," Cleveland general manager Chris Grant said in a statement. "We know what a competitor he is and how much he wants to be on the court helping his teammates. In the meantime, he has our full support, and we look forward to welcoming him back as he recovers."

Cavaliers center Anderson Varejao will miss the remainder of the season after developing a blood clot in his lung, the team announced Monday. Varejao, who recently had knee surgery and was expected to miss 8-10 weeks, will require treatment with blood thinners for the next three months because of the clot, which was discovered last Thursday. He is expected to make a full recovery. "Clearly, our players' health is our top concern and we are disappointed for Anderson, and his family," general manager Chris Grant said in a statement. "We know what a competitor he is and how much he wants to be on the court helping his teammates. In the meantime, he has our full support, and we look forward to welcoming him back as he recovers."

Analysis: Varejao was in the midst of his finest NBA season, averaging a stellar 14.1 points and 14.4 rebounds per game, which was tops in the league. However, the issue marks the third consecutive season that he will play fewer than 31 games due to a setback and also stunts the Cavaliers' rebuilding project. He sat out 41 games last season with a broken wrist and was sidelined for 51 games in the previous season after tearing a tendon in his ankle while running after practice. His absence for the remainder of the season will keep Tristan Thompson and Tyler Zeller as the team's starting frontcourt, but neither are expected to generate the numbers Varejao did. Fantasy owners in seasonal formats should part ways with Varejao at this point.
