And let's not forget about Jose Guillen, who had an absolute cannon.

Paul Maholm f***ing sucks. Even if we make the playoffs our frontline pitching isn't good enough to make any noise. We'll be done in the first round. Wren has to make a move in the off-season to add at least someone that resembles a staff ace.

Minor is pretty damn good, I would feel confident in him.

Plus you have Teheran, Hudson and Medlen.

That's a very solid 2-3-4 for the playoffs.

All good mid rotation starters. None are aces. It's extremely hard to win a World Series without an unquestioned #1 type staff ace who you can rely on in big do or die games.

I'm not saying it's impossible, because the White Sox ('05), Marlins ('03) and the Angels ('02) all have done it in recent memory. But it sure is tougher.

If you considered Matt Cain an ace in 2010 (3.14 ERA, 1.08 WHIP) then why not Minor in 2013 with his 3.04 ERA and 1.08 WHIP?

STL in 2011 had Carp (3.45 ERA, 1.25 WHIP) as their ace.

dodgers start out the second half taking two in a row from the nats in washington

hanley ramirez has been absolutely unreal lately. i don't think i've ever seen somebody as locked in as he's been at the plate. on top of that, our bullpen's been phenomenal lately and our starting pitching has been nasty with a rotation of kershaw, greinke, ryu and nolasco. this could be a really dangerous team

any pirates fans getting nervous with the 3 game losing streak? i really hope they don't fold in the second half again...

Still lacking a true ace. Teheran and Minor are still young (well, Minor is young-ish) so maybe one of them will turn into an ace, but right now Medlen, Hudson, and Maholm are inconsistent or just really good mid-rotation guys. We don't have a legit ace which I think is pretty crucial in the playoffs unless the bats are really hot. And with Atlanta, it's been pretty much feast or famine for our offense all year long since our batters strikeout at an obscene rate. So there's going to be games in a playoff series where they strikeout 12+ times and score 0-2 runs.

Reds have a chance to get a 3 game sweep of the Pirates. If that happens, I wonder if some self doubt starts to creep in Pittsburgh's heads? They haven't played very good ball lately.
