Default Gerald Wallace is gonna be so overpaid

4 years 40 million

Only the first year of his contract & he's only averaging 6.2 PPG/3.2 RPG/2.4 APG and appears to have no shots in the offense & looks like he's declining by the game.

Brooklyn should've just kept the 6th pick & drafted Harrison Barnes. Cheaper & more effective.

Not to mention max contract Joe Johnson averaging 15-3-3 on 40% shooting. This Nets team has a bleak future.

Nets have quite enough offense. How about his defense?

Ironic that the former Net fan from less than 2 years ago starts this thread.

Meanwhile...
-Wallace changes the game with his D and is our 3rd most important player behind Deron and Lopez
-The Nets were not high on Barnes and would have drafted Henson
-No G.Wallace and Deron perhaps bolts.

He was injured in the second game, hasn't been healthy, is playing under 30MPG. He's only played in 5 games so far.

Relax.

Lopez has been our best player far and away. And yeah with D.Will and JJ struggling mightily from the field it's a miracle we're 8-4.. though the schedule has been kind. I can't wait to see what we look like when they do get it together, I just hope we don't become too perimeter oriented.

Also, G.Wallace's impact isn't seen in the stat sheet, but he is our glue guy that makes us better when he plays.

The problem is he's going to be hurt on and off here and there. The way he plays and getting older don't mesh very well. These threads will be funny in 2 years, the same people defending him will be skewering him. JJ too. It's the nature of the big contracts.

i agree that hes overpaid. we could have gotten him as a FA for much cheaper and retained our pick, which would have been top 3-4 because we would have lost a bit more game without wallace. deron wasn't going to leave either way so i dont know why people (management, fans, coaches) keep saying they felt a threat from deron to leave. like he was really going to go to dallas and play with just dirk. barnes would have been a GREAT back-up right now and then start in a couple of years. they nests have a 3 year window to harvest the world's attention then it's time for different direction mode.

Dallas is .500 without Dirk... imagine how good they could have been with Deron and Dirk? Yes, they were a real threat.

Also, we would not have had much of a chance at G.Wall in free agency. He knew nothing about the Nets when he came here and is still so admittedly scared of NYC that he lives in NJ. He's a small town guy that only played with small market teams.

And again the Nets did not like Barnes nor have they. They wanted T.Rob, but with him gone would have picked Henson at #6.

Way too much revisionist history here...

Wallace would not have had that much of a market, not at the money they paid him. He's a guy who is not going to be able to play like he does at an advanced age and they signed him for 4 years. And they wouldn't have picked 6 possibly because Wallace helped them get less ping pong balls.

He only played 16 games last year... so who knows how he impacted their record. It's highly speculative.
And while I think the 4 years was a mistake he aligns with JJ and Lopez. I think the plan will be to trade him later on as an expiring as well.

Meanwhile they other thing to keep in mind.. the Nets never were under the cap. They held on to all their cap holds and exceeded it. They have the 2nd highest payroll I believe (or Miami may) at $86m.. they didn't want to be limited to a $58m cap. That $25m or so is a big difference.

The lottery was all very close, a game or two had an impact. Clearly he had some impact on their record. If he had no impact at all then he was a terrible signing.

Considering the volatility of the line-up, lack of talent and Wallace in out and of the line-up.. no it was highly speculative what their record would have been. If he was still on Portland, does that mean Portland would have beaten some teams above the Nets? Who knows....

But the important thing was keeping D.Will who approved of the trade.
When they traded for Wallace they were only 2 games back of the playoffs with Lopez expected back soon.. it didn't work out last season the way they wanted. It did for this season.

And again, their roster now at $85m is much better than what they could have put together if they went into free agency.

Lastly the trade also got rid of Shawne Willliams who was under contract this year (where is he?) and they got 2 Trade Exceptions.. 1 they turned into Reggie Evans.. their 2nd most consistent player this season.

We don't know anything. But i still don't see how the Nets so casually throwing away a lottery pick on a player Portland didn't want to resign made that much sense. They protected the pick only top three. No one can convince me that made sense. Wallace is a nice player and the kind of player people like (hustles, etc.) so the tendency is to defend the move but i didn't like it. If they protect it top 6 portland says no? Really?

I'm wondering how much Net fans will like his contract the 2nd time he misses 2 weeks, and the third time, etc. Because it's going to happen. The way he plays pretty much ensures it.

You're defending it now but every net fan that day when the trade was made was happy until they announced the pick and it was only protected top three, and everyone said WTF? ARE YOU KIDDING?

Wallace is an extremely valuable player.

However, the Nets botched this situation very badly. They gave up the 6th pick for him, because of this, they overpaid him to keep him longterm. However, he's a very valuable player and a very good one.
