the 72 lakers used to hold the second longest streak behind the 96 bulls. now it belongs to the Spurs.
Viewers of yesterday’s broadcast on Fox Sports Southwest were treated to a interesting nugget before tipoff: At 26-4, the Spurs entered the Toronto game tied with the 1995-96/1996-97 Chicago Bulls and the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers for the best 30-game road stretch in NBA history.
Not that Gregg Popovich and Co. will care, especially considering how difficult it is to compare teams across multiple teams and eras. But that’s not bad company considering all three of those clubs won NBA titles, with the ’96 Bulls (72-10) and ’72 Lakers (69-13) ranking among the best teams ever assembled.
The Spurs then improved to 27-4 with their double-overtime victory over the Raptors, pushing them past the Lakers and keeping pace with the Bulls, who won 28 of 32 road games before losing two of their next four and four of their next eight. (The ’72 Lakers lost three of five on the road after their 26-4 start.)
