Nothing. Kobe's defense has been embarrassingly bad all season. I mean, it's half of the game.

Guys like LeBron and Durant shouldn't be punished because they've stayed healthy, their teammates have stayed healthy, and they and their teams have been consistently great all season long. LeBron's averaging 27-8-7-2 on 56/40/75 shooting; and Durant's on the verge of a 50/40/90 season while leading the league and scoring and putting up 29-8-5-2 averages. And both of their teams are on pace for 60+ wins. Anyone but LeBron and Durant at 1 & 2 in the MVP race (in that order) would be a joke based on the season to date. That's obviously subject to change over the next 20+ games.
The only reason Lebron won the award over Durant last year was all those games Wade "missed" (he'd sit out one game and then play like there was nothing wrong with him the next two). So why not give Kobe extra credit for carrying his team despite all the injuries?

LeBron's team won over 50 games, Kobe's will be lucky to hit 45.

Because the Heat had the equivalent of what would be about 55-60 wins in a regular 82 game season and finished second in the East; and the Lakers will be doing good to win 45-48 games this year and finish top 7 in the West.

Lebron ended this race a few weeks ago and now he's back on coast/cruise control mode. The rest of the NBA is jst battling for 2nd place

I don't have that big a problem with putting kobe as high as 3rd on the list but in that case harden shouldn't be that much below him.

Lebron won bc he was the best player last year. Also he carried them to the first seed and a NBA title. Kobe is nowhere near the best player, is playing pathetic defense letting scrubs light him up night after night, and is on one of the most underachieving squads to date in NBA history that is fighting for a 8th seed despite its talent and he should win MVP?

said the guy that never watches any games. kobe conssitently shuts down the best perimeter scorer on the opposing team and picks up the slack for Nash and Meeks

Harden is not even arguably the most valuable player on his own team. Give me Parsons, Asik anyday

#2 is still way better than #8. And NBA champ is way better than first round loss (2nd round loss at best). Lebron was the clear MVP last season and dominated in the finals. Kobe is now a pathetic defender and the loaded Lakers will be an low playoff seed that will get nowhere near the CF let alone the finals.

Kobe can play defense but did you watch him vs Westbrick? I actually felt bad for Kobe.. Dude was getting murdered..Westbrick is usually not that effective..

Now if you want to write about Kobe's offense that is another story. The dude has been magnifico

Defense is not half of the game. Sure you play defense the other half of the time, but it's value is not equivalent.

Plus, anyone who thinks Kobe's making the Laker defense worse by himself is kidding themselves. Kobe has been easily their best player and has played better than anyone could have expected. He's not the main reason for their defensive struggles. They'd still suck defensively with any other shooting guard. And if Kobe did play harder defensively, it'd likely take away from his offense. It's not just Kobe who does this. Most superstar offensive players do. Kobe has had to put up 28/5/6 and he's played 39 mpg at 34 years old in his 17th season. Expecting him to do much more would be crazy and there's no reason for Kobe to waste energy playing hard on defense when it would do nothing because the defense is a joke, mainly because of the coach and other players.
