I will also be posting NBA.com's weekly updated "Race to the MVP" results down here...

Current Week:
1. LeBron James
2. Kobe Bryant
3. Kevin Durant
4. Chris Paul
5. Carmelo Anthony
6. Dwyane Wade
7. Russell Westbrook
8. Paul George
9. Ty Lawson
10. James Harden

Race?.... What Race?.... I hate Lebron, but he is running away with the award right now the heat win streak is putting the nail in the coffin. Durant is coasting and Westbrook is taking on more offensive load which in turn is taking votes away from Durant. the Lakers don't have enough wins and have under-achieved so Kobe won't and shouldn't get it.

What about consistency? Isn't that valued highly?

How can a guy who has 0% chance to win MVP be #2? No offense to Kobe, as he's been great, but by the media's own standards he's not even close to a top 10 candidate let alone number 2... Maybe if Kobe can lead his team to 55 wins (Heat are on pace for 63 wins), and a top 4 seed in the West he has a chance, but the Lakers are only on pace for 41 at this point.

The Lakers don't have enough games left to get to 55 wins. The absolute best they could do is go 20-0 in their remaining games and finish the season 51-31. And I don't think even that would be enough to get them into even the top 5 of the West, because I'm fairly confident all 5 of the Spurs, Thunder, Clippers, Grizzlies, and Nuggets will finish with 52+ wins.

So basically, even if the Lakers finish the season on a 20 game win streak, the absolute best they can probably do is finish 6th in the West. That's how big of a whole they've dug themselves.

Would that be enough to warrant Bryant an MVP trophy by the media ? The Heat and Thunder would have to have a big slump by season's end too.

Didn't think of that lol. Just looked at them being .500. So basically you're telling me the Lakers have no shot at being a top 4 or even top 6 team at this point. Damn, didn't realise they had dug into that big of a hole. If the Lakers go on a 20 game win streak Kobe deserves MVP with that disaster of a roster.

It shouldn't be, but who knows. It's the same type of thing with Kobe (look at how well he's playing and where he's got his team despite inconsistent play from teammates and a lot of injuries) as it was when people were saying look at how poorly the Clippers are doing without Chris Paul. Guys like LeBron and Durant shouldn't be punished because they've stayed healthy, their teammates have stayed healthy, and they and their teams have been consistently great all season long. LeBron's averaging 27-8-7-2 on 56/40/75 shooting; and Durant's on the verge of a 50/40/90 season while leading the league and scoring and putting up 29-8-5-2 averages. And both of their teams are on pace for 60+ wins. Anyone but LeBron and Durant at 1 & 2 in the MVP race (in that order) would be a joke based on the season to date. That's obviously subject to change over the next 20+ games.

Lakers couldnt win 55 at this point not enough games left. Most they could win is like 50 or 51 and that would be to go undefeated rest of the way. Realistically Lakers might win 42 games.

I thin the 6-seed is possible, although it won't be easy. The Warriors have been pretty inconsistent lately, catching them isn't out of the question. I'd say absolute best case scenario, the Lakers go something like 16-4 over their final 20 games to finish 47-35. That means the Warriors would have to go 13-7 over their final 20 games to finish 6th ahead of the Lakers. The Lakers I believe would have the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Warriors, so the Warriors would have to finish 48-34 if the Lakers finish 47-35.

Take LeBron out, Wade and Bosh pick up the slack.
Take Durant out, Westbrook and Ibaka pick up the slack.
Take Paul out, Griffin and their bazillion role players might pick up the slack.
Take Kobe out, current Dwight, old Nash and injured Gasol don't pick up the slack.

I think that's the NBA's reasoning about a player's value. But the #2 spot and below don't really matter. LeBron will win it this year.

He's been consistent for the most part, in terms of playing good-to-excellent basketball. I'm sure you're not calling him inconsistent for almost averaging a triple double with a lower PPG for a stretch of games, are you?

What make Kobe that much more valuable than Harden though?
