How important is Ty Lawson to the Nuggets?

The Nuggets gave JaVale McGee the $10 million salary that rightfully belongs to Ty Lawson.
It was a silly move. Too many dollars. Too little sense.
What's taking Denver so long to rectify the mistake?
If the Nuggets want Lawson to be this team's leader, they can't treat their point guard like chopped liver.
Everybody with the Nuggets, from general manager Masai Ujiri to Rocky the mascot, knows Lawson is the team's most valuable player.
