DENVER (CBS4) – The news everyone in the NBA is talking about this month is the Los Angeles Lakers’ acquisition of Dwight Howard, but it’s actually another offseason move by the Lakers George Karl just can’t seem to forget.
The Denver Nuggets head coach is still shocked the Lakers were able to orchestrate a sign-and-trade deal for Steve Nash earlier this summer.
During his second appearance on CBS4′s Xfinity Monday Live Karl told host Vic Lombardi that Nash is probably his favorite active player in the league.
“I was so angry about that trade. I don’t usually get angry about trades, but that trade, wow. It set me off. I sent (Lakers general manager) Mitch Kupchak a nasty email. Oh man, he is the luckiest guy in the NBA,” Karl said.
Karl said the Lakers were “kind of falling apart” and they were able to get Nash, who he says is “maybe the only guy in the NBA that could save that team.”
With regards to the trade for Howard, the Nuggets were actually involved and scored their own All-Star — Andre Iguodala — in the process.
But Karl knows “We probably did make the Lakers better” because they’ve got Howard now. Karl said Howard is an even better defender than Andrew Bynum, who was sent to the Philadelphia 76ers as part of the trade.
Despite the eye-popping moves this summer by the Nuggets’ rival, Karl told Lombardi he thinks Denver will still be competitive with the Lakers.
“When we play the Lakers it’s totally size versus speed. We still like what we can do with speed,” he said. “I think the question is can we make enough threes to open the court up? If we do that our speed and our talent and our playmaking is still going to be first class offensively.”
Karl also talked at length on the show about Iguodala’s talents, saying he’s the type of “do-it-all” veteran player he’s been pining for.
Re: George Karl "I was so angry about the trade...."
Ohhhh I see but that wasn't even a trade it was more of a FA signing.... and why help us even more when he thought only Nash would send us over the top...

At some point you have to just worry about yourself. For all we know this Laker team could implode and Iggy could be the one missing piece for his incredibly deep team.

When Kobe retires he will have played with easily the most stacked rosters in modern history. Kobe's teammates would make Bill Russell blush...

By the way, there are many players in NBA history who played on "stacked" teams. Yet, many did not walk away with a championship, let alone 5. But, that doesn't fit your agenda does it.
By the way, LoL @ calling the 2009 and 2010 Lakers team "stacked." If you consider that team stacked, how do you feel about Lebron's championship team last year? Or the one he "lead" to a lost against the Mavs, a team featuring 1 Top 20 player, while the Heat had a player in the Top 10, and 2 players in the Top 5?

Nash ~ arguably the best pure PG in the league
D12 ~ best center in the league
Pau ~ one of the best if not #1 post scorer in the league
MWP ~ arguably one of the best on ball defenders in the league
Kobe is a great player, but I never saw him as the guy who carried his teams to championship, its usually the other way around and his production just ends up being filler.
