Default Danny Ainge is the runaway GM of the year

Guy fleeced the 76ers. He ended up trading getting away from Fultz and drafting the best player in the draft. On top of that, he is likely going to end up with another top pick and next year's stacked draft. Wow, what a move!!

How does one fleece another when the respective players aren't even 12 games into their careers?

Because they were taking tatum either way. So pretty much traded nothing for the laker/sac/philly pic.

I suspect Ainge wanted Tatum at #1 anyways, so regardless of whatever happens with the future pick, it's just gravy.

I'd say he definitely won that trade unless for some reason Fultz ends up being a HOFer, which tbh he's a little too dumb for that imo.

Yep I think that's exactly what Ainge was thinking, and quite frankly based on what I've seen so far, Tatum would have been the right pick @ #1.

because they are getting a top 5 pick next year in a loaded class. They are set, this is the type of move that wins championships.

And this is coming from a Lakers fan that hates Ainge

One month into the season, yes he turns out to be a genius. But lets wait a bit more and actually see a non injured Fultz on the court for at least a month before we see what's up.

I very much doubt Ainge was set on taking Tatum first overall, otherwise he wouldn't be desperate, he even flew cross-country on extremely short notice, and getting mad over not being able to workout Josh Jackson, who plays the exact same position.

I've seen enough out of Tatum to know that unless Fultz becomes an all timer, he made the right trade.

They traveled cross country to see him and he didn't cancel on him until after they had traveled. It could be that if he had REALLY blown them away in his workout and interview, they would have changed their minds, but...

Ainge is quoted back in June, literally the day after the draft, as saying they would have taken Tatum @ #1 if they had stayed at 1.

This is after the fact and therefore it doesn't prove anything at all. Of course he's going to say that about the guy he just drafted a few hours ago. What, did you really expect him to say something different? Do you know how media works?

You think he traded down because he thought it was a coin toss between Fultz & Tatum? No.

Maybe, MAYBE he felt it was a coin toss between Tatum & Jackson, but there's no way they pick Fultz @ 1 if they stay there.

As I said, maybe if the interview with Jackson would have been great and or the workout it would have changed their minds...

You act like just because they went to see him it was dead set they wanted him... no that's called doing your homework.

Also, not everyone in the entire world lies about their motivations or what truly happened...

If they were dead set on Jackson being the better player you don't think they would have just taken him anyways? What the ****?

The thing Ainge got from the whole saga was that Jackson absolutely didn't want to play for the Celtics. So yeah, I do think they wouldn't have just taken him.

You paint it out to be that he flew cross country on extremely short notice because was desperate to meet with him...

If he was that desperate to meet with him, it was because they were unsure at absolute best... because if he was convinced he would be the better player by that much of a margin, he wouldn't have needed to meet with him... he would have just taken him... regardless.

Any GM with any brains whatsoever knows that 99.99% of rookies aren't going to sit out their entire rookie contract or bypass that year completely only to re-enter the draft at a later year just because they don't want to play for a particular franchise.

I contend that the most likely scenario is that they had Tatum ranked as 1 or 1a and Jackson ranked as 2 or 1b and it was close enough that a great interview and or workout could have swayed them, but Tatum was always their favorite.
