he was thinking he could get a max contract and score like 30 ppg

and what's he doing? just that. you have to figure they'll be good sooner or later with all those lotto picks.

If I remember correctly, the role was a little more of an issue than the money.

Johnson wanted to go to a team where he could be more than the third option he was in Phoenix, which I suppose is understandable.

He's obviously got a lot of ability, and he's putting it to full use in Atlanta. He just shouldn't have picked a team with such freaking idiotic management.

Because he's set financially for the rest of his life, and gets to prove his ability as one of the best players in the game, instead of being a role player.

Yeah, JJ made his money and did the smart thing, the thing we all probably would have done.

But as a hoop fan it is disheartening. JJ may be the one missing player keeping this Suns team from an NBA title.

Plus, Atlanta is going nowhere fast. Josh Childress, Salim Stoudamire, Marvin Williams and Speedy Claxton are duds. Josh Smith still doesn't have a jumper. Sheldon Williams is still a rookie. This isn't the market JJ should have went to. Go to New York, where you can lose and still make front page news.

This trade was good for both teams: Suns got rid of a non-happy player that wanted a big contract and got a very interesting all-around player in Diaw plus the picks...

the suns were willing to give him the same amount of money as the hawks....the whole situation was handled badly on both sides

Childress isn't a dud, he's probably just best suited as the first swingman off the bench. Sure, that's not what they drafted him to be, but it doesn't make him a dud. Claxton's another story. Awful.

the suns are better off without him and with diaw. Where would they have been last year without diaw's positional versatility and the injuries to Stat and KT?
Even after they picked up thomas they wouldve been brutalized in the frontcourt without diaw. Can you imagine patty Burke starting?

They are a much better team with Diaw, better passer (at least out of the post and so forth) and does all teh littl ethings PHX needs not more points.

wasnt claxton a dud years ago? I know he elevated his game last year behind paul but man they fell for it in ATL.

True. Only thing is, the Hawks aren't a good enough team to have a one dimensional scorer off the bench. Plus, Childress is a defensive liability. If we were talking San Antonio or Dallas, Childress would be a bit more valuable.

The Suns need another wingman who can create his own offense. Diaw isn't that guy, and since Nash is the only Sun who can create his own offense, that puts him under too much pressue to do EVERYTHING come crunch time. At least that was the case last year. With Amare, things are a bit different this year. But last year, JJ's scoring would have been a huge lift in the playoffs.
